## Before 1971: Kerala University’s Ernakulam centre

CUSAT did not start from nothing. Several of its departments were older than the university and began as postgraduate units of the **University of Kerala** in Ernakulam. Wikipedia dates the Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry to 1938, the postgraduate Department of Law to 1962, Physics and Hindi to 1963, the School of Management Studies to October 1964 and an oceanography programme to 1965.

On **10 July 1971** the University of Cochin was established by an Act of the Kerala Legislature, taking over the Ernakulam departments. In **February 1986** it was renamed Cochin University of Science and Technology, signalling its focus on applied science, engineering and the marine sciences.

## Growing departments, 1970s–2020s

The 1970s set CUSAT’s character. Polymer Science and Rubber Technology (1971), Ship Technology (1974) with a BTech in Naval Architecture (1975), Electronics (1975) and Industrial Fisheries (1976) gave the young university a strongly applied, marine and industrial flavour. The **School of Engineering** opened in 1979, added PhD programmes in 1981 and began BTech courses in 1995.

The 1990s added the newer sciences: the Centre for Science in Society and the Department of Biotechnology (1991), Computer Applications (1994), the International School of Photonics and the Department of Instrumentation (1995), and Physical Oceanography and Safety and Fire Engineering (1996). In 1999 the university opened an engineering college at Kuttanad, in Alappuzha district.

Later additions were smaller and more specialised: Electrical and Electronics Engineering and a Centre for IPR Studies (2003), the International Centre for Economic Policy and Analysis (2004), the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion (2009), a Women’s Studies Centre (2010), a Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Kaushal Kendra for vocational courses (2015) and an integrated MSc in Biological Sciences (2021). ## Campuses and the metro

CUSAT’s main campus is at Thrikkakara, on the Kalamassery side of the city, with a smaller Lakeside campus in central Ernakulam for some older departments and the Kuttanad engineering college further south. The area around the main campus – the University Road, Pathadipalam and South Kalamassery – grew into a student neighbourhood; the [Thrikkakara history](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/thrikkakara-history/) has the wider picture. When Kochi Metro opened on 17 June 2017, **Cochin University** station gave the campus a direct rail link; see the [CUSAT metro station guide](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/cusat-metro-station-guide/).

The university also served as the affiliating body for early institutions in the area. The National Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, forerunner of [NUALS](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/nuals-history/), was affiliated to CUSAT from 2002, and the co-operative medical college that became [Government Medical College, Ernakulam](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/govt-medical-college-ernakulam-history/) was first affiliated to it.

## November 2023

On the evening of **25 November 2023** a crowd crush at the entrance to an open-air auditorium during the Dhishna technical festival killed four people and injured dozens of others; Wikipedia describes those who died as students. The inquiries and changes that followed are set out, with care, in our separate page on the [CUSAT stampede of November 2023](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/cusat-stampede-november-2023/).
