## The constituency and its segments

Ernakulam is one of Kerala’s 20 Lok Sabha seats. It is made up of seven Assembly constituencies, all in Ernakulam district: **Kalamassery** (No. 77), **Paravur**, **Vypin**, **Kochi**, **Thrippunithura**, **Ernakulam** and **Thrikkakara**. Kalamassery’s own Assembly history is told in our [Kalamassery constituency page](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-assembly-constituency-history/). Note that not every place around the NAD signal falls inside Kalamassery segment: neighbouring Edathala, for instance, belongs to a different Assembly constituency.

Parliamentary elections are run by the Election Commission of India. Kerala voted in a single phase in both 2019 and 2024.

## 2019 result

The margin was **1,69,153 votes**, and turnout was about **77.6%**, according to Wikipedia’s page on the 2019 election in Kerala. The constituency page has a typing slip in one table (giving the runner-up 3,22,210 votes and the margin 1,69,053), so we follow the state page. Statewide, the UDF won 19 of Kerala’s 20 seats that year.

The winning candidate led in the **Kalamassery segment by 20,689 votes**, according to Wikipedia’s constituency page. The runner-up, P. Rajeev, went on to win the Kalamassery Assembly seat in 2021.

## 2024 result

## The longer record

Ernakulam has elected members from both major fronts over the decades. Wikipedia’s list of MPs includes C. Mohammed Ibrahimkutty (INC) in 1952, A. M. Thomas (INC) in 1957, V. Viswanatha Menon (CPI(M)) in 1967, Henry Austin (INC) in 1971, Xavier Arakkal in 1980 and again in 1996 as an LDF-backed independent, and K. V. Thomas (INC) in 1984 and 2009. Sebastian Paul, an LDF-backed independent, won by-elections in 1997 and 2003 and the 2004 general election, and George Eden (INC) won in 1998.

Against that background, the two most recent results were both won by the INC candidate, with the winning margin rising from about 1.69 lakh in 2019 to about 2.5 lakh in 2024, while overall turnout fell. We report these as results only; reasons for voting shifts are outside the scope of this archive.

## Reading the numbers carefully

- **Segment leads are not segment results.** Wikipedia gives the lead in each segment, not the full vote count, so we do not calculate shares by segment.
- **Turnout figures differ** between tables and between the ECI’s provisional and final counts. Where we show two figures, both appear in the source.
- **Lok Sabha, Assembly and local results often differ** in the same place. Compare with the [Kalamassery municipal results](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-local-body-elections-2020-2025/) and the [Edathala panchayat results](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/edathala-panchayat-elections-2020-2025/).

## Why it matters at the NAD signal

Many men living in Kalamassery are registered to vote in their home towns, while others move their registration here. If you are staying long term at Ashraf Gents Hostel, our guide to [updating your voter ID after moving](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/updating-voter-id-after-moving/) explains the process.
