# The Kalamassery Industrial Estate: Units Past and Present

> The Kalamassery Industrial Estate was set up by the Government of Kerala and still gives its name to a ward of Kalamassery Municipality, but its founding year is surprisingly hard to pin down in published sources. This page, written as of October 2026, sets out what can be documented: the agencies behind Kerala’s estates, the large units that grew up around Kalamassery from 1962, the small-scale units of South Kalamassery and the newer technology parks.

## What an ‘industrial estate’ meant

In post-independence India, an industrial estate was a piece of land that the government developed with roads, power, water and ready-built sheds, then let or sold to factories. The idea was to make it easier for small and medium firms to start production. Kerala ran its estates through several agencies over time: the **Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC)**, established in 1961 for medium and large industry; **Kerala SIDCO**, formed in 1975, which runs industrial estates and mini estates for small units in all 14 districts; and later **KINFRA**, which develops larger industrial parks.

Kalamassery was a natural place for such an estate. It lay on the railway and the Aluva highway (today [NH 544](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/nh-544-kalamassery-stretch-guide/)), next to the Periyar and the Eloor–Udyogamandal factories, and it had large employers arriving in the early 1960s. The broader story of the town’s industrialisation is in [how Kalamassery became an industrial town](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-industrial-history/).

## What the records say – and don’t

Wikipedia states that the Kalamassery Industrial Estate was set up by the Government of Kerala and is home to many major companies, naming Apollo Tyres and HMT among the firms in the area. The municipality’s website lists **Industrial Estate** as one of its 42 wards, alongside wards such as HMT Junction, Glass Colony, Medical College and University, and names the estate as a key feature of the town.

We could not find, in any source we were able to check, the year the estate was formally set up or which agency first ran it. The municipality’s own history document was not available online when we looked. Rather than guess, we leave the founding date open and give the dated history of the units around it.

> If you have a dated government order, a SIDCO or KSIDC record, or a newspaper report about the estate’s founding, it would help fill this gap. Treat any founding year you see without a source with caution.

## Big units, small units

The large units that defined the area were the **Premier Tyres** factory (now [Apollo Tyres, Kalamassery](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/premier-tyres-to-apollo-kalamassery/)), which began production in September 1962, and **HMT**, whose machine-tool complex began in 1964 and whose estate later became the site of many public projects – see [HMT’s land story](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/hmt-kalamassery-land-and-factory-1960s-2020s/). The older Alupuram aluminium works nearby predated both; see the [Alupuram history](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/indian-aluminium-alupuram-history/).

Smaller firms clustered around them. Wikipedia notes that part of **South Kalamassery** works as a small-scale industrial area, with units such as perfume-making and plastic recycling. Our [Kalamassery industrial development area guide](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-industrial-development-area-guide/) describes the area as it is used today.

## From sheds to tech parks

From the 2000s, new industrial land in Kalamassery took the form of parks rather than estates. KINFRA’s **Hi-Tech Park** in Kangarappady houses non-polluting industry, special economic zones, the NUALS campus and Kerala Startup Mission’s Technology Innovation Zone – see the [KINFRA Hi-Tech Park history](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kinfra-hi-tech-park-history/) and [Kerala Startup Mission’s history in Kalamassery](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kerala-startup-mission-kalamassery-history/). In 2025 the Adani Logistics Park began on the former HMT plot. The shift, broadly, was from tyres and machine tools to warehouses, electronics and software.

## Why it matters near the NAD signal

The estate and the parks explain why so many people commute into Kalamassery for shift work, apprenticeships and start-up jobs – our [workplaces near Kalamassery](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/workplaces-near-kalamassery/) page lists current employers. Ashraf Gents Hostel, a men-only hostel and PG at the NAD Road signal, is about 1.3 km in a straight line from KINFRA Hi-Tech Park, according to OpenStreetMap; the indicative rent (about ₹2,000–3,000 a month) is confirmed on the call.
