# Kalamassery Municipality Elections: 2020 and 2025 Results

> Kalamassery Municipality, which came into existence on 1 April 1990, elects a council every five years. The 2020 election produced a council so evenly split that the chairperson was chosen by drawing lots; the 2025 election, held after a statewide redrawing of wards, produced a clear majority. This page sets out the results neutrally, as of October 2026, and notes what we could not confirm.

## The municipality in brief

Kalamassery became a municipality on **1 April 1990**, according to the history document published on the municipality’s official website. The town had grown around the industrial estate, HMT and the colleges, a story told in our [industrial history of Kalamassery](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-industrial-history/). Today the council has **46 wards**, each electing one councillor, and it is part of the [Kalamassery Assembly constituency](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-assembly-constituency-history/). Practical services are covered in our [municipality guide](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-municipality-guide/).

Local body elections in Kerala are run by the State Election Commission, not the Election Commission of India, and are fought mainly between three fronts: the Congress-led UDF, the CPI(M)-led LDF and the BJP-led NDA, along with independents.

## 2020: a tie settled by lot

Kerala held its local body elections in December 2020, during the pandemic. In Kalamassery the result left the two main fronts level. When the new council met to elect a chairperson, the vote ended in a **20–20 tie**, and under the rules the winner was decided by drawing lots. The UDF’s **Seema Kannan** was chosen, Onmanorama reported in its round-up of Ernakulam’s municipal chairpersons on 28 December 2020.

We have not found an official ward-by-ward table for 2020 that we could open, so we do not give front-wise seat totals for that year. The State Election Commission’s results portal is the place to check them.

## 2025: new wards, clearer result

Before the 2025 polls Kerala redrew ward boundaries across its local bodies under the Kerala Delimitation Commission; the official site of neighbouring Edathala panchayat, for example, cites the commission’s final order for its new 24-ward map. Statewide the exercise, headed by State Election Commissioner A. Shajahan and based on the 2011 Census, raised the number of wards from 21,900 to 23,612, and municipal wards from 3,113 to 3,241, according to Wikipedia. Kalamassery’s council now has 46 wards. We could not confirm from a source we opened how many wards it had before, so we leave the earlier figure out.

Polling took place in two phases on **9 and 11 December 2025**, with Ernakulam district in the first phase, and results were declared on **13 December 2025**. Statewide turnout was 73.69%, according to Wikipedia. In Kalamassery, according to Wikipedia citing The Hindu and the State Election Commission’s TREND portal, the result was:

| Front | Wards won (of 46) |
|---|---|
| UDF | 28 |
| LDF | 11 |
| NDA | 1 |
| Independents | 6 |

Onmanorama’s round-up of municipal results on 13 December 2025 reported that the UDF had won every municipality in Ernakulam district except Thrippunithura, which went to the NDA, and that statewide the UDF was leading in 54 of 86 municipalities, the LDF in 28 and the NDA in two.

> Wikipedia’s infobox names a current chairperson, but we did not find a news report confirming the 2025 chairperson election, so we have not named one here. The municipality’s website is the best place to check.

## How to read these results

- **Margins are small in a 46-ward council.** In 2020 one seat either way would have avoided the draw of lots.
- **Ward maps change.** If you vote here, check your ward name and number after each delimitation; see [updating your voter ID after moving](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/updating-voter-id-after-moving/).
- **Local and Assembly results differ.** Compare with the [Ernakulam Lok Sabha results](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/ernakulam-lok-sabha-2019-2024/) for the same area.

## Why it matters near the NAD signal

The municipal council decides on roads, waste collection and building permits around the NAD signal. If you rent a bed at Ashraf Gents Hostel and plan to stay a few years, it is worth knowing who runs the town and when the next election falls (2030 on the five-year cycle). More local history is in the [Kalamassery history archive](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-history-archive/).
