## First the depot, then the school

The school makes sense only alongside the depot it serves. According to the Indian Navy, the **Naval Armament Depot (NAD), Aluva** was inaugurated on **19 September 1958**. It gave its name to NAD Road, NAD Junction and the bus stops around them (our [NAD history page](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/naval-armament-depot-aluva-history/) has the details). A depot brings families: naval and civilian staff, and later the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel who guard such installations. Many of them are transferable and move between cities every few years.

The **Kendriya Vidyalaya** system was designed for exactly those families. Wikipedia records that it began on **15 December 1963** as **Central Schools**, first for the children of defence personnel and then for central government employees in general. KVs share a common syllabus and teach in both English and Hindi, so a child can change schools mid-year in another city without falling behind.

On its official site the school calls itself a **Defence-sector Kendriya Vidyalaya established in 1984**. It says it mainly serves the educational needs of the **Indian Navy, CISF and other central government establishments in and around NAD Aluva**. Our sources do not say exactly why a separate KV opened in 1984, a quarter-century after the depot, so we have not guessed.

## The PM SHRI label

On **7 September 2022** the Union Cabinet approved **PM SHRI (PM ScHools for Rising India)**. According to PIB, this centrally sponsored scheme aims to upgrade more than **14,500** existing government schools into exemplar schools for the National Education Policy 2020, over five years from 2022–23 to 2026–27. PIB says the scheme runs through existing structures, including the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, and that schools were selected through a “challenge mode”. The NAD school’s website now uses the name **PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya NAD Aluva**. We did not find a public record of the date it was selected.

## What we left out

We found no reliable public source for the school’s first building, its early enrolment, or when it reached Class XII, so those are not on this page. We have also left out names of staff and students. Anyone researching further can try the school’s own office, the KVS Ernakulam regional office, and the archives of the Navy’s Southern Naval Command.

## Why it matters near the NAD signal

The KV is one reason the NAD area has always had a mix of people from across India: naval and CISF families, central government staff and their visitors. Today many of the men living around the NAD Road signal are also from outside Kerala, working in the depot area, the industrial estates or the [Adani logistics park](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/adani-logistics-park-kalamassery-explained/). For a man who needs a room nearby, Ashraf Gents Hostel at the NAD Road signal has monthly and per-night stays (call +91 90746 23855).
