## June 2017: the first trains through Kalamassery

Before 2017, getting from Kalamassery to Edappally or the city meant a bus along NH 544 or a train from the small [Kalamassery railway station](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-railway-station-history/). That changed in June 2017. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) chose to open its line from the northern end first, so the opening section ran from **Aluva to Palarivattom**. It had 11 stations over about 13.4 km, and three of them were in or beside Kalamassery: **Muttom**, **Kalamassery** and **Cochin University**.

Wikipedia’s Kochi Metro article records that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the section on **17 June 2017**. The articles on [Kalamassery station](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-metro-station-guide/) and [Cochin University station](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/cusat-metro-station-guide/) give **19 June 2017** as the day they opened to the public. Both dates appear in the record, and they describe two different events: the ceremony and the first day of public service.

The **Kochi1** smart card and mobile app were launched with the metro. Wikipedia cites coverage dated 17 June 2017 reporting the launch; its later history is covered on our [Kochi1 card page](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kochi1-card-history/).

Wikipedia gives inconsistent lengths for some of the shorter extensions, so we have left distances out except for the first section.

## What the opening changed in Kalamassery

The metro was built above NH 544, so Kalamassery’s stations sit over the highway rather than inside the town’s older lanes. For the colleges along the corridor — CUSAT above all, but also the [Government Polytechnic](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/govt-polytechnic-kalamassery-history/) and the institutions on the HMT side — it gave students a fixed-time trip to Edappally and Ernakulam that buses on a congested highway could not promise.

The early years were not easy for ridership. Wikipedia’s table puts the 2017 total at about 50 lakh passengers (a part year) and 2018 at about 1.25 crore. The 2019 figure fell slightly, to about 1.13 crore, and then Covid-19 closed the system for months: 2020 shows about 61.9 lakh and 2021 about 71.2 lakh. Our page on [Covid-19 and the Medical College](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/covid-19-kalamassery-medical-college/) covers that period locally.

Recovery came with the longer line. Wikipedia lists about 2.49 crore passengers for 2022–23, 3.23 crore for 2023–24, 3.56 crore for 2024–25 and 3.66 crore for 2025–26, with the most recent daily average put at about 1.25 lakh. Note that the earlier figures are calendar years and the later ones financial years, so the series is not perfectly comparable. The [ridership milestones page](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kochi-metro-ridership-milestones/) goes into more detail.

## After Phase I: feeders, hours and the next lines

Once the line reached Thrippunithura in March 2024, KMRL’s attention moved to connections. In January 2025 it started ‘Metro Connect’ electric feeder buses; one of the first routes ran from Kalamassery station to the Government Medical College, every 30 minutes in the daytime, according to Onmanorama. On **15 February 2026** last departures from the terminal stations moved to 11 pm, and on 22 July 2026 extra peak-hour trains were added, Onmanorama reported.

Two extensions now shape the metro’s future. The **Pink Line** from Kaloor to Kakkanad was under construction in 2026, with commissioning targeted for August 2027; see [the Pink Line timeline](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/metro-pink-line-kakkanad-timeline/). A further extension from Aluva towards the airport and Angamaly reached the detailed-project-report stage on 1 September 2026, according to Wikipedia. Fares over the years are tracked on our [metro fare history page](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kochi-metro-fare-history/).

> Opening dates for future sections are targets. Check KMRL’s announcements before planning around them.

## Why this matters near the NAD signal

The NAD Road signal is not on the metro, and for most people living there Kalamassery station is the nearest stop, reached by bus or auto along the HMT side. That small gap explains a lot about daily life in this corner of town: the metro made the city reachable, but the last kilometre still depends on roads. Residents of Ashraf Gents Hostel, a men’s hostel at the NAD Road signal, use the same route; see the [station guide](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-metro-station-guide/) and our [archive hub](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kalamassery-history-archive/) for the wider story.
