## How to read these numbers

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) publishes ridership in several ways: daily counts, monthly totals, calendar-year and financial-year totals, and sometimes combined figures that include feeder buses and the Water Metro. Newspapers quote whichever is to hand, so numbers that look contradictory are often measuring different things. We say which measure each figure uses. The background to the opening is in [Kochi Metro reaches Kalamassery, 2017](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kochi-metro-reaches-kalamassery-2017/), and fares are covered in [Kochi Metro fare history](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/kochi-metro-fare-history/).

## 2017–2019: a slow start

The first stretch, from Aluva to Palarivattom, served mainly the northern suburbs, including Kalamassery, Cochin University and Edappally. The Week reported in September 2019 that average daily ridership before the Thykoodam extension was about **40,000**. Free or special days drew big crowds: on the first anniversary in June 2018 the metro carried 1,55,606 people, but that day was free, so it is not counted as a fare-paying record.

The turning point was the extension through the city centre to **Thykoodam** on **3 September 2019**, adding Ernakulam South, Kadavanthra, Elamkulam, Vyttila and Thykoodam. Within days, daily ridership crossed **one lakh** for the first time, at about 1,01,000, The Week reported on 13 September 2019; the second-highest day had been 99,680 on 7 September.

## Covid and recovery

Ridership fell sharply in 2020, when services were suspended during the national lockdown and resumed later with restrictions; Wikipedia’s calendar-year totals fall from about 1.13 crore in 2019 to about 61.9 lakh in 2020 and 71.2 lakh in 2021. We have not been able to confirm the exact suspension and resumption dates from the sources we used, so we leave them out. Recovery was steady after that: Onmanorama reported that cumulative ridership passed **5 crore on 21 December 2021** and **6 crore on 14 July 2022**, and that average daily ridership rose from 79,130 in January 2023 to about 94,000 in December 2023. In 2023, daily ridership topped one lakh on 40 days.

## Annual totals

| Period | Ridership | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 (part year) | about 50 lakh | Calendar year |
| 2018 | 1,24,95,884 | Calendar year |
| 2019 | about 1.13 crore | Calendar year |
| 2020 | about 61.9 lakh | Covid year |
| 2021 | about 71.2 lakh | Covid restrictions |
| 2022–23 | 2,48,75,822 | Financial year |
| 2023–24 | 3,23,23,249 | Financial year |
| 2024–25 | 3,56,17,580 | Financial year |
| 2025–26 | about 3,65,92,000 | Financial year |

> All totals are from the ridership table on Wikipedia’s Kochi Metro article, which mixes calendar and financial years. Treat the rounded figures as approximate.

## The 2026 record

On **1 January 2026**, with trains running until 2 am after New Year’s Eve, the metro carried **1,39,766** passengers, and the integrated network of metro, feeder buses and Water Metro carried **1,61,683** journeys, the highest single day since operations began, Channel IAM reported on 2 January 2026. The same report said the metro had carried more than 17.52 crore passengers since 2017. Earlier peaks included about 1.25 lakh on 1 January 2020, according to KMRL’s own release. Wikipedia gives daily ridership of about 1.25 lakh in 2026.

## What it means at the NAD signal

Kalamassery and Cochin University stations have been on the line since day one, and the growth in ridership tracks how much the metro has become part of daily life north of Edappally.
