# Muppathadam and Edayar: Riverside Villages to Industrial Belt

> Muppathadam and Edayar are villages on the Periyar’s banks near Aluva, north-west of Kalamassery and close to Eloor, in Kadungalloor grama panchayat. Their written history is thin. Most of what is recorded concerns the industrial estates that grew here, the Muppathadam and Edayar industrial areas, and the companies on them. As of October 2026, this page sets out the dates we could verify and marks the rest as unknown.

## The villages before the estates

**Kadungalloor** is a riverside village and grama panchayat in Paravur taluk, divided into East and West Kadungalloor, according to Wikipedia. Its infobox gives an area of 18.06 km² and a population of 30,539. The same article cites the 2001 census at 35,451 people in 10,125 houses. The two figures conflict and the article is tagged as poorly sourced, so treat both with caution. Wikipedia counts about 21 temples, 9 mosques and 3 churches in the village. The largest temple is the **Sree Narasimha Swamy temple**, known for its *paal payasam*, and **St. John the Apostle Church** stands at Muppathadam.

We found no published account of when Muppathadam or Edayar were first settled, or of what their names mean, so we do not offer one. The panchayat’s own website describes its institutional history only in general terms. It mentions water supply, sanitation, Kudumbashree and, more recently, waste management and digital services, but gives no founding date.

## Industry on the riverbank

The river that made the land fertile also made it attractive to industry, which needs water and a way to discharge it. The **Edayar Industrial Development Area** and the **Muppathadam** industrial estate grew along the bank, a short distance from the older chemical town of [Eloor and Udyogamandal](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/eloor-island-history/). Wikipedia lists CMRL, Indo-German Karbon and Periyar Forms among Kadungalloor’s units. It also notes a recent surge in warehouses, because the area is close to the Vallarpadam container terminal and the airport.

- **Binani Zinc / Edayar Zinc** – the zinc smelter at Binanipuram that gave the area its post office name. It stopped smelting in **2014** and was renamed Edayar Zinc Ltd. In December 2022 it announced plans for an industrial and logistics park, “Fortune Grownd”, on its 108 acres, valued at ₹800 crore. Full story: [Binani Zinc at Edayar](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/binani-zinc-edayar-history/).
- **Cochin Minerals and Rutile (CMRL)** – founded on **18 August 1989** with KSIDC’s help. It makes synthetic rutile and iron-chloride products at Edayar. The company has been the subject of tax and corporate-affairs investigations reported in 2023–24; these are covered neutrally in our [CMRL history](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/cmrl-edayar-history/).

## Names on the post office map

The postal map records the industrial era better than any other public source. The zinc works gave the area the name **Binanipuram**, with its own sub post office, PIN 683502. Muppathadam has its own sub office, 683110, with a branch at West Kadungalloor. India Post’s data places both in the **Alwaye** postal division and in the Paravur block, the same division as the NAD and Edathala offices across the river. Company names on post offices tend to outlast the companies: the smelter stopped in 2014, but Binanipuram is still on the address. Our [PIN code history](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/india-post-pin-changes-kalamassery/) explains how these offices fit together.

## The river and its burden

As in Eloor, the arrival of industry made the stretch of the Periyar past Edayar a subject of complaints, inspections and court cases. We do not repeat allegations here. The official findings are gathered in the [Eloor pollution timeline](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/eloor-pollution-timeline/) and the [May 2024 fish kill page](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/periyar-fish-kill-may-2024/). Wikipedia’s Kadungalloor page also shows an irrigation installation on the river, a reminder that farming and industry still share the same water.

## Why this history matters near the NAD signal

Workers at Edayar and Muppathadam often live on the Kalamassery side and commute across the river by bus or two-wheeler. Ashraf Gents Hostel, a boys’ hostel and PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, Kalamassery, takes working men on monthly terms, with one month’s advance under its published terms. Confirm the indicative ₹2,000–3,000 per head rate on +91 90746 23855.
