## Who runs the course

Most people say “Nippon skill centre”, but the building is the **Nippon Kerala Centre (NKC)** in the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park area of Kalamassery. It belongs to **ASA Kerala**, the Japan alumni association of Kerala, which was founded in 1968 by Keralites who trained in Japan through AOTS. ASA Kerala lists six programme types: training in Japan, training in India, language training, internships, skill development, and WNF programmes. The Japanese language course is the one most open to the public. Our [Nippon Kerala Centre guide](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/nippon-kerala-centre-kalamassery/) explains the building and how to reach it.

## What 100 hours gets you

N5 is the entry level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test: kana, basic kanji and simple everyday sentences. N4 is the level most Japan work routes ask for. Under the Specified Skilled Worker (i) visa, Japan accepts JLPT N4 or the Japan Foundation’s JFT-Basic as proof of language ability. Covering N5 and N4 in 100 class hours is a fast pace, and most learners need regular self-study of kanji and vocabulary between classes to keep up.

The course ends with a certificate of completion. That certificate is not the JLPT. You sit the JLPT separately, in July or December, at a test centre outside Kerala. See our [JLPT guide for Kerala candidates](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/jlpt-exam-guide-kerala-candidates/).

## How it compares with other options

| Option | Level | Hours | Fee (published) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASA Kerala, Nippon Kerala Centre | N5 + N4 | 100 | ₹16,500 | Evening online; 3 days a week |
| ASAP Kerala “Japanese – N4” | N4 (needs N5 first) | 150 | ₹18,000 incl. GST | Online/offline; age 18+, 10th pass; skill loan available; training partner OISCA International |
| Private institutes in Kochi | Varies | Varies | Varies | Check trainer qualifications and JLPT results |

The ASAP Kerala course is aimed at Japan job routes and lists Technical Intern Trainee, Specified Skilled Worker and language support staff as target roles. It expects you to have finished N5 already. The ASA Kerala course starts from zero, which suits a complete beginner.

## Before you enrol

- Ask whether the next batch is online or at the Nippon Kerala Centre, and the exact days.
- Ask whether the fee covers the Marugoto books and mock tests.
- Ask about ASA Kerala student membership (listed at ₹1,500 a year) and whether members get a lower course fee.
- Plan for the JLPT fee and the travel to Chennai, Bengaluru or Karur on top of the course fee.
- If your goal is a job in Japan, read our [Japan jobs guide](https://ashrafgentspghostel.adserr.com/japan-jobs-from-kerala-ssw-guide/) first, because the tests you need depend on the route.

## Staying near the centre

Online classes mean you can study from anywhere. If you also attend workshops, mock tests or events at the centre, it is about 1.1 km from the NAD Road signal.
