Kochi Metro Fares, 2017–2026: Every Change and Discount

Kochi Metro opened in June 2017 with fares in distance slabs from ₹10 to ₹60, announced in November 2016. In September 2020, as services restarted after the Covid lockdown, KMRL cut the maximum to ₹50. Since then most changes have been discounts rather than new fares: Kochi1 card offers, WhatsApp QR tickets in 2024 and a student pass in July 2025. This page sets out each change as of October 2026.

The original slabs (fixed 2016, used from 2017)

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) published its fare structure months before the trains ran. Wikipedia, citing a report in The Hindu on 30 November 2016, records a minimum of ₹10 and a maximum of ₹60. The line was divided into fare zones: ₹10 covered the first 2 km and the fare went up ₹10 per zone. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened Aluva–Palarivattom on 17 June 2017, Kalamassery residents got those fares (see Kochi Metro reaches Kalamassery). The Kochi1 card, a prepaid smart card, was launched with the metro; its own history is in Kochi1 card history.

Wikipedia notes that metro fares were slightly higher than Volvo city-bus fares for the same trips, which shaped early debate about ridership.

The 2020 reset

The biggest fare change so far came during the pandemic. Metro services stopped in March 2020 with the national lockdown. On Saturday, 5 September 2020, ahead of reopening, KMRL announced a simpler table with just four fares, ₹10, ₹20, ₹30 and ₹50. According to Onmanorama, ₹20 covered up to five stations, ₹30 up to 12 stations, and anything longer cost ₹50, down from the old ₹60 maximum. Kochi1 card holders got a 10% discount, the weekday pass fell from ₹125 to ₹110, and the weekend pass from ₹250 to ₹220. Expired Kochi1 cards were replaced free of charge.

We did not find a published change to the four-fare table after the line reached Thrippunithura in March 2024. Check KMRL’s current fare chart before relying on any single figure.

Digital tickets and discounts, 2023–2025

From 2023 KMRL moved towards phone tickets. Its WhatsApp ticketing, launched on 10 January 2024, gives a QR ticket with 10% off during normal hours and 50% off in the non-peak windows of 5.45–7 am and 10–11 pm, according to Onmanorama. KMRL QR tickets are also sold through ONDC-connected apps, as our metro hacks page explains. Axis Bank’s current Kochi1 card page advertises a 20% discount per swipe; the page is undated, so we cannot say when that rate started or whether it still applies.

Students got a dedicated product in mid-2025. From 1 July 2025 KMRL sold a student pass at ₹1,100 for 30 days with 50 trips from any station, and a three-month pass at ₹3,000, for students up to age 30 with valid ID. Onmanorama reported that KMRL’s managing director put the average trip at ₹33, so 50 trips would otherwise cost about ₹1,650. The report also said the pass came after criticism that earlier plans had been withdrawn; it did not say what those plans were.

The Water Metro, opened in April 2023, has its own fares. At launch it offered introductory passes of ₹180 for 12 trips in a week, ₹600 for 50 trips in a month and ₹1,500 for 150 trips over three months, according to Onmanorama. See Water Metro launch, 2023.

Why it matters near the NAD signal

For anyone living at the NAD Road signal, the metro is the main way to reach Edappally, Kaloor and the city, and Kalamassery and Muttom stations are nearby. Fare changes add up over a month of commuting. Ashraf Gents Hostel’s indicative ₹2,000–3,000 monthly rent, confirmed on the call, is one part of that budget. Our monthly budget page and the Kalamassery history archive cover the rest.
