How to use this archive

Each page in the archive follows the same rules. Dated claims are tied to a named source — an official site, a newspaper such as The Hindu or Onmanorama, a court record or, with care, Wikipedia. Where sources disagree we say so and give both figures. Where we could not verify something, we left it out rather than guess. Elections are reported as results only. Pages about tragedies avoid graphic detail and focus on what happened, what inquiries found and what changed.

Most pages include a timeline table with three columns: date, what happened and source. Future dates for projects such as the Pink Line or the HMT–NAD road link are labelled as targets, because several have already slipped. For a sense of how this archive was researched, read how we built the Kalamassery archive.

Kalamassery year by year, 2016–2026

2016

The Cochin Cancer Research Centre was established as an autonomous institution under the Health Department, working at first from the Medical College pay-ward building (CCRC timeline). In the Supreme Court, a status-quo order was passed on HMT’s remaining Kalamassery land, the order that would later hold up the Judicial City. In the assembly election V. K. Ebrahimkunju (IUML) won Kalamassery by 12,118 votes, according to Wikipedia.

2017

Kochi Metro arrived. The Aluva–Palarivattom section, with Muttom, Kalamassery and Cochin University stations, was inaugurated on 17 June and opened to passengers on 19 June; the Kochi1 card launched with it. A month earlier, on 17 May, the State Cabinet had approved the metro’s second phase to Kakkanad (2017 opening). Cyclone Ockhi struck at the end of the year (Ockhi page).

2018

The August floods hit Eloor, Aluva and the Periyar banks hardest (2018 floods). In December the Adani Group bought HDIL’s Blue Star Realtors and with it the 70 acres of former HMT land that had sat idle since a planned Cyber City stalled (land history). The metro’s first full year brought about 1.25 crore passengers, according to Wikipedia.

2019

On 13 January the Chief Minister opened Kerala Startup Mission’s Integrated Startup Complex in KINFRA Hi-Tech Park (KINFRA history). The metro reached Thaikoodam on 3 September. In the Lok Sabha election Hibi Eden (INC) won Ernakulam by 1,69,053 votes, according to Wikipedia.

2020

Covid-19 shut colleges, offices and the metro for months; Wikipedia’s figures show metro ridership falling to about 61.9 lakh for the year (Covid page). The metro still opened its Petta extension on 7 September, and 23 electric ferries were ordered for the Water Metro. Local body elections were held at the end of the year (results).

2021

On 15 February the Vyttila–Kakkanad Water Metro terminals were inaugurated, though public service waited until 2023. In the assembly election P. Rajeev (CPI(M)) won Kalamassery by 15,336 votes, according to Wikipedia. A 1.9 km section of the Seaport–Airport Road in HMT Colony was completed (road history).

2022

2024

The metro reached Thrippunithura on 6 March and the Water Metro reached Eloor on 14 March. Mass fish deaths in the Periyar on 21 May led to competing explanations and court and tribunal action. Hibi Eden retained Ernakulam on 4 June (2024 in review).

2025

The old HMT lands changed: Adani’s logistics park broke ground on 23 August, the Cabinet approved a Judicial City in September and HMT land passed to the state roads agency for the airport road. Local body elections followed in December (2025 in review).

About this archive

Why an archive for one corner of Kochi

Kalamassery changes fast, and news reports scatter. A student arriving at CUSAT, a nurse joining the CCRC or a worker on the Adani site meets a place shaped by decisions made years earlier — a land sale in 2006, a metro line in 2017, a tender in 2026. This archive puts those decisions in one place. It is written from the NAD Road signal, where Ashraf Gents Hostel, a men’s hostel and PG, stands among the HMT lands, the Medical College and KINFRA. For everyday guides, start from the NAD Road guide or the hostel’s home page.
