Kalamassery in 2025: The Year in Review

2025 was the year the old HMT lands at Kalamassery started to change hands and uses for real. The Adani Logistics Park broke ground in August, the State Cabinet approved a Judicial City on HMT’s remaining 27 acres in September, and HMT land for the Seaport–Airport Road passed to the state roads agency in October. Pink Line piers rose along the Kakkanad route, and the year closed with local body elections in December. This review is written as of October 2026.

HMT’s land: three projects at once

Three separate projects converged on the old HMT estate in 2025, and it helps to keep them apart. The 70 acres HMT sold in 2006, later bought by Adani, became the Adani Logistics Park: the state had announced a ₹500 crore park with a Flipkart facility in January, and the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone on 23 August 2025. The 27 acres HMT still holds were approved by the Cabinet in September for a Judicial City, a new High Court complex costing over ₹1,000 crore; because those acres have been under a Supreme Court status-quo order since 2016, the state applied to the court, which issued notice on 26 November. The Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association said it would oppose the application. A smaller strip, 1.6352 hectares, was reported in October as being handed to the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation for the Seaport–Airport Road after an earlier Supreme Court interim order.

Metro, buses and boats

In January KMRL launched ‘Metro Connect’ electric feeder buses; one of the first routes linked Kalamassery station with the Government Medical College every 30 minutes in the daytime, Onmanorama reported. Along the Pink Line, Wikipedia records the first pier cap on 29 August and the first U-girder on 24 October 2025. The Water Metro reached 50 lakh passengers on 20 September 2025, 29 months after it began, and on 11 October opened routes from the High Court to Willingdon Island and Mattancherry. See the Pink Line timeline.

December: local body elections

Kerala held its local body elections in two phases. Ernakulam district voted in the first phase on 9 December 2025, and votes were counted statewide on 13 December 2025, according to Wikipedia. Statewide, the UDF led in 54 municipalities and the LDF in 28. In the Kochi Corporation, the UDF won 47 of 76 wards, the LDF 20, the NDA 6 and others 3.

For Kalamassery municipality, Wikipedia’s town article gives the 2025 result as UDF 28, LDF 11, NDA 1 and independents 6, out of 46 wards. We could not find a second source confirming those figures or naming the chairperson elected afterwards, so treat them as provisional. Ward-level detail is on Kalamassery local body elections 2020–2025 and Edathala panchayat elections.

Courts and probes

Two cases from earlier years moved forward. In January 2025 police filed a charge sheet in the CUSAT stampede case against the former principal of the School of Engineering and two teachers, Onmanorama reported. In April 2025 the SFIO filed a prosecution complaint before the Economic Offences Court in Kochi in the case concerning payments by Edayar’s CMRL; the case was continuing in the courts in the reports we found.

Why 2025 matters near the NAD signal

Every big land decision of 2025 was within a short distance of the NAD Road signal, so this is the year when the neighbourhood’s future became visible: warehouses on one side, a possible court complex on another, a road being pushed north towards NAD. Ashraf Gents Hostel, a men’s hostel at the signal, lists the Adani port area and the Seaport–Airport Road among nearby places on its public profile. The story continues in Kalamassery in 2026 so far and on the archive hub.
