What “NAD” stands for
NAD is the Naval Armament Depot, an establishment of the Indian Navy near Aluva, on the Kalamassery side. According to a 1958 Press Information Bureau release, the depot was opened on 19 September 1958 — the first armament depot of the Indian Navy set up in peacetime — on about 300 acres. It has since grown, and today it supports the Navy’s operations. Like any defence establishment, the depot itself is a restricted area: it is not open to visitors, and you should not photograph it.
Where NAD Road runs
NAD Road links the Kalamassery town area with the depot area towards Aluva. On the Kalamassery side it passes Kalamassery railway station, and it connects with HMT Road, which leads towards HMT, the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park and Government Medical College. Local buses run on the route between Aluva and NAD Signal.
The Seaport–Airport Road is also being completed through this area. Its HMT–NAD stretch was held up for years over land; in January 2026 the state said the project had technical sanction and tendering would follow.
Why NAD Road feels calmer
NH 544 through Edappally and Kalamassery carries heavy through-traffic towards Aluva and the airport. A 2025 police report to the High Court called Edappally junction a congestion hotspot, and Kochi Metro’s draft mobility plan reported delays of up to 14.5 minutes on the Edappally–Aluva–Athani stretch.
NAD Road is a local road rather than a highway, so it does not carry that through-traffic. In local experience it is noticeably quieter, with long tree-lined stretches — you can see this in the Street View above. It still has its busy moments around junctions and at school and office times, so check it at the hours you will travel.
Living along NAD Road
- Quieter evenings than the highway side of Kalamassery, which suits study and day sleep after night shifts.
- Access by rail and bus — Kalamassery railway station is on NAD Road, and buses run towards Aluva.
- Short rides to HMT Junction, the Medical College area and CUSAT for food, shops and the metro.
- Fewer shops right on the road, so many residents shop and eat at HMT Junction.
