Key facts
- Pathalam is a locality within Eloor municipality, Ernakulam district; Pathalam Junction is a four-way junction about 2 km from the highway at Kalamassery.
- The Pathalam regulator-cum-bridge is a bund with shutters on the Periyar operated by Kerala’s Irrigation Department.
- The Pathalam bund helps hold back saline water from the sea and Vembanad Lake, which can otherwise threaten drinking-water intakes upstream.
- After three shutters of the Pathalam regulator were opened on 20 May 2024, a major fish kill downstream was investigated by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board.
- Eloor is an island of about 14 km² between two distributaries of the Periyar.

What the Pathalam bridge actually is
Locals say “Pathalam bridge” or “Pathalam bund”. It is a regulator-cum-bridge: a row of shutters across a branch of the Periyar, with a road on top. In the dry months the shutters are kept down to stop salt water pushing upstream from the backwaters, which matters because drinking water for Kochi is drawn from the Periyar further up. Before the monsoon or when water levels rise, the Irrigation Department opens shutters to let the river flow.
This simple job has a complicated side. Because industry discharges into the river above and below the bund, opening the shutters can release stagnant, oxygen-poor water. That is what an official report found happened on 20 May 2024: three shutters were opened, polluted water and sludge rushed downstream, and fish died in large numbers near Eloor. If you see crowds or news crews at the bund after a fish kill, this is the background.
The road from Kalamassery to Eloor
From the NH 544 side of Kalamassery, the Eloor road runs west to Pathalam, crosses the bund and reaches Pathalam Junction – Wikipedia puts it about 2 km from the highway. From the junction, roads lead into Eloor, towards the Udyogamandal factories and north towards Manjummel and Paravur. Pathalam itself is a residential and industrial area with an ESI hospital, useful for insured workers.
- Who uses it – factory staff and contract workers for FACT, TCC and other Eloor units, residents of Manjummel and Eloor, and students heading to CIPET at Eloor.
- Traffic pattern – heaviest at shift-change times and when tankers and lorries move; the bridge is narrow compared with the highway.
- Two-wheelers – common and practical; watch for heavy vehicles and slippery surfaces in rain. See living with a two-wheeler.
Things worth knowing before you cross daily
- Smells from the industrial area vary with wind and season; if you are sensitive to them, visit at different times before taking a job or room on the Eloor side.
- Low-lying parts of Eloor and Pathalam flooded in the 2018 Kerala floods. Keep an eye on alerts in heavy rain – our monsoon tips explain why.
- Fishing and bathing in this stretch of river are not a good idea given repeated pollution reports.
- Buses run between Kalamassery and Eloor, but check timings for early or late shifts; an auto may be the only option at night.
A short history of the crossing
Before the bund and road, the islands of Eloor were reached by boat; the place grew from a farming and fishing village into an industrial town only after FACT arrived in the 1940s. The regulator’s role in managing salinity became more important as Kochi’s water demand grew. We could not confirm the year the present structure was built, so treat any date you hear locally with care. Living on the Kalamassery side instead
Plenty of people who work in Eloor choose to sleep on the Kalamassery side, with its railway station, metro and wider choice of food. Ashraf Gents Hostel is on NAD Road, at the signal, Kalamassery – a boys’ hostel and PG for students, staff and working men. Ask the hostel how you would get to Pathalam at your shift times before you decide.
The indicative rate on its public profile is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance; confirm on +91 90746 23855. The rooms are on the home page, and our Eloor guide describes the town across the river.
