Autos, Taxis and Ride-Hailing in Kalamassery: Tips for Newcomers

Kerala sets auto-rickshaw and taxi fares by government order. Since May 2022 the minimum auto fare has been ₹30 for the first 1.5 km and ₹15 per km after that. In Kalamassery autos are the usual last-mile link between the metro, the highway and places like NAD Road, HMT and the Medical College.

What an auto should cost

Kerala revises auto and taxi fares by government order, most recently (as far as we could verify) with effect from 1 May 2022. The figures reported then were:

VehicleMinimum fareThen
Auto-rickshaw₹30 for the first 1.5 km₹15 per km
Quadricycle₹35 for the first 1.5 km₹15 per km
Taxi under 1,500 cc₹200 for the first 5 km₹18 per km
Taxi over 1,500 cc₹225 for the first 5 km₹20 per km

So a short hop from a metro station to a nearby junction should be close to the minimum, and a 4–5 km ride a little over double it. Waiting time, night travel and trips beyond city limits can add charges. Fares may have been revised again since; the rates in force should be on the fare card that autos are expected to carry.

Meter, fare card and night charge

  • Ask for the meter. Say ’meter idu’ (’put the meter on’) politely as you get in. Most drivers will.
  • If there is no meter, agree the fare before the auto moves. Use the minimum fare and per-km rate above as your guide.
  • Night surcharge: Kerala’s rules allow extra at night — reported as 50% within city limits. Ask the driver to show the fare card if the figure seems high.
  • Return charge: for trips to places where the driver is unlikely to get a fare back, some drivers ask for extra. Agree it upfront.
  • Complaints: overcharging can be reported to the Motor Vehicles Department; note the auto’s registration number.

Fares and surcharge rules are set by the state and change from time to time. Check the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department website or the fare card in the vehicle for the current figures.

Auto stands and where to find one

Autos wait at stands near metro stations, major junctions such as Premier Junction and HMT Junction, the Medical College, and near bus stops on NH 544. Stand drivers usually take you in turn. Late at night, stands thin out, so save the number of a driver you have used before — many residents have a ’regular’ auto driver for early trains and hospital runs. See the Premier Junction and HMT Junction guides for what is around each.

Ride-hailing apps

App-based autos and cabs from companies such as Uber and Ola work in Kochi, and are handy when you do not know the route or want a fixed price up front. Availability around Kalamassery’s inner roads can be patchy at odd hours, and drivers sometimes call to ask for directions in Malayalam — a landmark such as ’NAD Road signal’ or ’CUSAT Junction’ helps. The Kerala government’s own app, Kerala Savaari, launched in 2022 as India’s first state-run online taxi service and was piloted in Thiruvananthapuram; check whether it serves Kochi when you arrive.

Etiquette that makes life easier

  • Carry small notes or use UPI; ₹500 notes for a ₹40 ride cause friction.
  • Sit in the back; share autos only when the driver offers.
  • Tell the driver your landmark first, then the street — Kalamassery addresses are landmark-led.
  • For hospital emergencies at night, call an ambulance rather than hunting for an auto. See hospitals and clinics near Kalamassery.
  • A few words of Malayalam go a long way; see our phrases for newcomers.
