Key facts
- The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) was established in 2005 by an Act of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
- NUALS’s postal address is NUALS Campus, H.M.T. Colony P.O., Kalamassery, Ernakulam 683503.
- NUALS admits BA LLB students through CLAT and also offers a one-year LLM, an executive LLM, postgraduate diplomas and PhD programmes.
- The Kerala High Court is on High Court Road, Marine Drive, Ernakulam (PIN 682031), in the city centre south of Kalamassery.

Where NUALS is
NUALS sits on a compact campus of about ten acres in the HMT–KINFRA part of Kalamassery. Its official address is NUALS Campus, H.M.T. Colony P.O., Kalamassery, Ernakulam 683503. The neighbours are the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park, HMT and the Government Medical College, all on the north side of NH 544. This is a different side of town from CUSAT, which many first-time visitors confuse it with.
It is not on the metro line itself. The nearest station is Kalamassery on NH 544, and from there students use an auto, bus or two-wheeler for the last stretch. See Medical College Road and HMT Junction for the roads around the campus.
Who looks for a room outside campus
- LLM students on the one-year programme, who often arrive with a few weeks’ notice.
- PhD scholars and research assistants, who want a quiet room for long writing days.
- Executive LLM and diploma students who come for contact classes.
- Undergraduates who need somewhere for a gap between allotments, or who return early for moots and events.
Check with the university about its own accommodation first. If you do need a private room, the questions below matter more for law students than for most.
Moots, research and internships: how your calendar affects the room you need
A law student’s year is uneven. Moot court preparation means late nights in the library and research rooms; legal aid camps and seminars take up weekends; and internships – with judges, advocates, firms, legal services authorities or NGOs – can take you away for weeks at a time.
- Ask how absences are handled. If you will be away for a four-week internship in another city, find out whether you still pay the full month, and whether your things can stay.
- Ask about late returns. Moot practice and library sessions run late; know the gate rules before you sign.
- Ask about a study surface. You will read more than most students. Twin sharing with a reasonable roommate is easier than a crowded dormitory.
- Keep paperwork clean. Get receipts for the advance and each month’s rent. Our guide to advance, deposits and agreements explains the usual terms.
Interning at the Kerala High Court from Kalamassery
The Kerala High Court is on High Court Road near Marine Drive in Ernakulam. Law students intern there with advocates and, from time to time, through official programmes – the Kerala State Legal Services Authority, for example, has run a structured internship for law students at the High Court and allied institutions. Kalamassery is a workable base for this: take the metro south from Kalamassery towards the city centre and finish with a short walk or auto, or use one of the many buses along NH 544 to the city. Kochi Water Metro also has a terminal at the High Court, though it does not start from Kalamassery – see can you use the Water Metro from Kalamassery?.
Court work starts early and the city-bound roads are busiest in the morning. Do the trip once on a weekday before your first day so you know how long it really takes.
Junior advocates who stay on after graduation face the same commute every day; our guide for junior lawyers and clerks at the High Court looks at that in more detail. You may also have heard of the proposed Kerala Judicial City at Kalamassery – useful background, but plan around the High Court where it is now.
Why NAD Road works for NUALS men
Ashraf Gents Hostel is a men-only boys’ hostel and PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal in Kalamassery. Its public profile lists NUALS among the places within about 3 km, together with the Medical College, the Science Park and the Cochin Cancer Research Centre. The indicative rate on the public profile is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance – confirmed on the call.
