Men’s Hostel near CUSAT, Kalamassery

CUSAT’s main campus is in South Kalamassery, about 1 km from the Cochin University metro station. University hostel seats are limited and first-year students in particular often have to find a private room for a while, so many male students rent in Kalamassery, Thrikkakara or along the metro line and travel in.

Three campuses – make sure you know which is yours

When people say “CUSAT” they nearly always mean the main campus in South Kalamassery, on the Thrikkakara side of NH 544. It holds the administrative office, central library, School of Engineering and most science, management, law and humanities departments, along with hostels, canteens and playgrounds.

But two groups of students study elsewhere. The Lakeside Campus on Fine Arts Avenue in Ernakulam city, about 12 km away, houses the marine-science departments such as Marine Biology, Physical Oceanography and the School of Industrial Fisheries. And the Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad (CUCEK) is at Pulincunnu in Alappuzha district, roughly 65 km away. If your department is at Lakeside or Kuttanad, living in Kalamassery would mean a long daily trip – check before you book anything.

Within the main campus, the School of Engineering is split between two blocks, often called the SOE campus and the Siberia campus. Ask seniors which block your classes are in; it changes which gate is most convenient.

The metro advantage

The Cochin University metro station sits on NH 544 in South Kalamassery. The university’s own directions say the main campus is about 1 km, around 15 minutes on foot, from the station. That makes any room within walking distance of a metro station between Aluva and Edappally a realistic option: Kalamassery and Pathadipalam stations are next door on either side. Our Cochin University metro station guide and Kalamassery metro station guide explain exits and connections.

Metro fares add up over a month, so compare them with a bus pass, a shared auto or a bicycle. The bus routes guide lists the main corridors.

When the university hostel is full

CUSAT has separate boys’ and girls’ hostels run through its hostel office, but allotment is not guaranteed. Students and education portals report that priority tends to go by distance from home and year of study, and a September 2026 Onmanorama report on campus infrastructure specifically mentioned a lack of hostel accommodation for first-year students. Plan for at least one semester in private accommodation, and keep checking with the hostel office.

What CUSAT students usually look for in a private room:

  • A predictable commute – ideally under 30 minutes door to gate, including lab days that run late.
  • Twin sharing rather than dormitory – you will be studying in your room more than you expect, especially around end-semester exams.
  • A kitchen or nearby cheap meals – the campus canteens close in the evening. See eating well on a budget.
  • Month-to-month terms – so you can move into a university hostel if a seat opens up. Our article on advance and agreements explains what is normal in Kerala.
  • Clear entry rules – fests, project work and night lab sessions mean late returns. Ask about gate timings before you pay.

Where CUSAT students tend to live

South Kalamassery and the lanes behind the university are the obvious choice, and fill quickly in July and August. Thrikkakara, towards the Seaport–Airport Road, is the other side of the same campus; see our Thrikkakara guide. Further out, Kalamassery town, HMT Colony and NAD Road are usually a little quieter and can be cheaper, at the cost of a short bus, auto or metro ride. Our neighbourhoods map compares them.

Ashraf Gents Hostel for CUSAT men

Ashraf Gents Hostel is a men-only boys’ hostel and PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal in Kalamassery – on the HMT side of the highway rather than the CUSAT side. It suits students who don’t mind a short ride to campus in return for a quieter road. Check the route to your department gate on a map; it depends on whether you use the metro, a bus or a two-wheeler.

The photos show twin-sharing rooms with cots and mattresses, red-oxide floors, a balcony, a kitchen with sink and shelves, and a tiled bathroom with a western toilet. The indicative rate on the public profile is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance; this is confirmed on the call.
