The college and where it stands
Bharata Mata College was opened on 5 July 1965, founded by Joseph Cardinal Parecattil, and is run by the Archdiocese of Ernakulam–Angamaly. It started as a junior college and added degree courses from 1970. Today it offers undergraduate programmes in subjects such as Economics, English, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Physics and Commerce, postgraduate courses, and MBA and MSW programmes. It is aided, co-educational and affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. The college also describes itself as Kerala’s first fully solar-powered college.
Its address is Seaport–Airport Road, Thrikkakara, Kochi 682021. The college lists CUSAT, NPOL, Model Engineering College, Infopark and the Cochin SEZ as nearby landmarks – which tells you it sits in the band between Kalamassery and Kakkanad.
Thrikkakara routes: three ways in
The college itself gives two road approaches, and students from Kalamassery use a third:
| Coming from | Approach (as described by the college or commonly used) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| North / Edappally side | Via Judgemukku on the Edappally–Muvattupuzha road | Useful if you arrive from Edappally or the metro at Edappally |
| South / Kakkanad–Ernakulam side | From the NGO Quarters / Palli stop on the Kakkanad–Ernakulam road | Useful from Kakkanad and the civil station area |
| Kalamassery side | Cross NH 544 at the CUSAT end and continue along the Seaport–Airport Road | Cochin University metro station is on this side; check bus routes locally |
Our guide to the Seaport–Airport Road explains how this road links Kalamassery, Thrikkakara and Kakkanad, and the bus routes guide covers the main services. For a broader look at the area, see the Thrikkakara guide.
Choosing a side to live on
- Thrikkakara itself – shortest trip, residential lanes, popular with students of BMC, MEC and CUSAT, so early booking matters.
- Kakkanad side – more IT-park housing and generally higher rents; good if you also have a part-time job at Infopark. See Kakkanad or Kalamassery?.
- Kalamassery side – a ride across NH 544, but close to the metro, the railway and Aluva; useful if you go home often by train. Compare areas on our neighbourhoods map.
Whichever side you choose, think about food as much as rent. Thrikkakara has tea shops and small hotels around its junctions and near the temple, and the Kalamassery side has its own cluster near the metro and NAD Road – see places to eat near Kalamassery. Students who cook in their room or hostel kitchen save the most. During Onam, the Thrikkakara temple festival brings crowds and traffic to the area, so allow extra time for travel to college in that season.
MSW students at BMC have fieldwork placements across the district, and MBA students often have internships in the city – both are reasons to stay near a good bus corridor rather than right beside the college.
Ashraf Gents Hostel for BMC students
Ashraf Gents Hostel is a men-only boys’ hostel and PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal in Kalamassery – on the Kalamassery side, so BMC is a bus or two-wheeler ride away rather than a walk. It suits students who value a quieter road, the metro nearby and twin sharing, and who don’t mind a daily commute. Check the route on a map for your class times.
The photos show twin-sharing rooms with cots and mattresses, red-oxide floors, a balcony, a kitchen with sink and shelves, and a tiled bathroom with a western toilet. The indicative rate on the public profile is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance – confirmed on the call. Phone or WhatsApp: +91 90746 23855.
