Shops and Markets around Kalamassery: Where Residents Buy Everything

Most day-to-day shopping in Kalamassery happens within a short walk or auto ride: small provision stores, bakeries, vegetable and fish stalls and a few supermarkets along the main roads. For bigger or cheaper buys, residents use the metro to reach the Edappally malls or go further into Ernakulam for Broadway and the wholesale market.

How shopping works when you live in Kalamassery

Kalamassery is an industrial and college town rather than a shopping destination, so think of your shopping in three rings. The inner ring is whatever is near your room: a provision store, a tea shop, a bakery, a medical shop and probably a vegetable stall. The middle ring is the main roads – NH 544, HMT Road, the area around the Kalamassery bus stand and the junctions – where you find supermarkets, mobile shops and hardware shops. The outer ring is a metro ride away: the Edappally malls to the south, Aluva town to the north, and Broadway and the Ernakulam market in the city centre.

New arrivals often do the opposite – they go to a mall for everything in week one and then realise the small shop downstairs sells the same rice for less effort. The guides below are arranged so you can pick the ring that matches what you need.

Food shopping: groceries, fish and vegetables

If you will cook, ask your hostel or PG what the kitchen has before buying utensils. Many men buy a pressure cooker and a gas stove they did not need.

Eating out without overspending

Bigger purchases: phones, laptops and furniture

Planning your money and your first week

Shopping decisions are really budget decisions. Two guides help you put numbers on it:

For non-shopping errands – banks, post office, Aadhaar, hospitals – see the daily services directory, and for getting to any of these places see getting around Kalamassery.
