Key facts
- Broadway is a shopping street in Ernakulam, Kochi, about 2 km long from Basin Road to Chamber Road, lying between Marine Drive and MG Road.

- Market Road, parallel to Broadway, is lined with wholesale shops selling textiles, spices and plastic goods.
- The adjoining Ernakulam market was rebuilt as a four-storey complex by Cochin Smart Mission Limited and inaugurated in December 2024.
- Broadway is close to the Kerala High Court and Marine Drive, which has boat jetties and a Kochi Water Metro terminal near the High Court.

Why make the trip
Malls are convenient, but Broadway is where Ernakulam has shopped for generations. When the British took over Kochi from the Dutch, trade shifted from Mattancherry towards Ernakulam, and Broadway became its main shopping street. Some buildings are more than a century old, and shops like Valavi and Company trace their history to 1899. Today the street is lined with around a thousand small shops and is largely pedestrian.
For a hostel resident the attraction is practical: things that cost more in a mall or are hard to find locally – a strong umbrella, a steel tiffin box, a suitcase, bedsheets, spices in bulk, stationery – are sold here in many grades and prices, and bargaining is normal in many shops.
Getting there from Kalamassery
- Reach Kalamassery or Cochin University metro station on NH 544 (see the Kalamassery metro station guide).
- Take a train towards Ernakulam South / Tripunithura. No change is needed.
- Get off at MG Road or Maharaja’s College; both are on MG Road, east of Broadway.
- Walk west towards Marine Drive – Broadway runs parallel to the waterfront. Use a map app for the shortest lane from your station.
Kochi Metro fares are charged by distance in ₹10 slabs, with a published maximum of ₹60 at the time fares were fixed; the Kochi1 card gives a discount on each trip. Check the current fare at the counter. Buses along NH 544 to Ernakulam are an alternative – see buses in Kalamassery.
What to buy, and where on the street
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Spices and dry fruits | Wholesale spice dealers, many of them long-established Gujarati traders; buy by weight |
| Umbrellas, raincoats, bags, suitcases | Wide range before the monsoon – see monsoon tips |
| Steel vessels, tiffin boxes, plastic household goods | Useful for a hostel kitchen – compare with the first-week kitchen list |
| Textiles, mundu, shirts, bedsheets | Many cloth and readymade shops; Market Road has wholesalers |
| Books and stationery | Long-standing booksellers such as Pai & Co; see also second-hand books |
Alongside is the rebuilt Ernakulam market complex, inaugurated in December 2024, with vegetable, fish, meat, fruit and egg shops and a food court – useful if you also want to see a big city market (more in fish and vegetable markets).
Tips for a good trip
- Go on a weekday morning. Festival seasons – Onam, Christmas, Eid – bring big crowds.
- Carry cash as well as UPI; small shops prefer cash for tiny purchases.
- Ask the price in two or three shops before buying anything costly.
- Watch your phone and wallet in crowded lanes.
- Lanes can flood in heavy rain; avoid the trip on a red-alert day.
- Finish with a walk along Marine Drive and Mangalavanam at sunset.
Coming back to NAD Road
Broadway is a day out, not daily shopping, so living nearer the industrial and college belt in Kalamassery and visiting the city when you need to is a common pattern. Ashraf Gents Hostel at Ashraf house, NAD Road, Kalamassery (at the signal), is a men-only hostel/PG for students, staff and working men, with twin-sharing rooms, a balcony and a shared kitchen with sink and shelves.
The public profile gives an indicative rate of about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance, confirmed on the call: +91 90746 23855. Other shopping options closer to home are listed in the shops and markets hub.
