Fish and Vegetable Markets near Kalamassery and Aluva

Most people in Kalamassery buy fish and vegetables from small roadside stalls, two-wheeler fish vendors and neighbourhood shops rather than one big market. For a larger market, residents go north to Aluva town or south to the rebuilt Ernakulam market, which has dedicated vegetable, fish and meat sections.

Key facts

  • Ernakulam’s new municipal market complex, built under the Smart City mission at a cost of about ₹72 crore, was inaugurated on 14 December 2024.
  • The Ernakulam market complex has around 275 shop units, including about 130 vegetable shops and 28 meat and fish shops.
  • Kerala bans mechanised trawling for 52 days every monsoon, usually from 9 June to 31 July, to protect fish spawning.
  • During the trawling ban traditional and small boats can still fish, but supply of many sea fish falls and prices often rise.
  • Aluva, on the Periyar river north of Kalamassery, has a long-established town market that has been rebuilt as a multi-storey complex.

Buying fish and vegetables close to home

Kalamassery does not revolve around one famous market the way Aluva or Ernakulam do. Instead, fresh food comes to you in small pieces: vegetable shops at junctions, fruit carts, fish stalls by the roadside, and vendors on scooters or bicycles with a box of fish who stop at regular points each morning. For a hostel resident buying for one to four people, this is usually enough.

The trick is to notice where locals queue. A fish stall with a steady line of housewives at 8 a.m. is turning over stock quickly; a stall with nobody at 6 p.m. is probably selling the morning’s leftovers.

The bigger markets

Aluva town

Aluva sits on the Periyar a short metro or bus ride north of Kalamassery. Its old market dated back to the Maharajas’ time and has been replaced by a newer multi-storey complex; the streets around it still have wholesale vegetable, banana, coconut and fish trade. Go early in the morning for the best choice. Our Aluva town guide explains how to get there and what else is in town.

Ernakulam market

Ernakulam’s main market, beside Broadway, was rebuilt by Cochin Smart Mission Limited for the Kochi corporation. The new four-storey complex was inaugurated in December 2024 and was reported to hold about 130 vegetable shops, 28 meat and fish shops, fruit, egg and coconut shops and a food court. It is a good half-day trip combined with Broadway shopping.

Market layouts and timings after a rebuild take time to settle. Check recent news or ask a local before planning a special trip.

What to know about fish in Kerala

  • Sea fish versus backwater fish. Sardines (mathi), mackerel (ayala) and anchovies (netholi) are cheap everyday sea fish. Pearl spot (karimeen) and prawns are dearer.
  • Buy it cleaned. Most stalls will clean and cut fish for a small charge or free if you are buying a reasonable amount. Say ‘curry cut’ or ‘fry cut’.
  • Fresh signs: clear eyes, red gills, firm flesh that springs back. Avoid fish sitting in melted ice for hours.
  • Cooking in a shared kitchen: frying fish smells. Agree with your room-mates first, keep a window open and wash up straight away.

Seasonal tips

SeasonWhat changes
June–July (monsoon)The annual 52-day trawling ban, usually 9 June to 31 July, cuts the supply of many sea fish; prices of sardine and mackerel often go up and more freshwater or frozen fish appears.
August–September (Onam)Vegetable demand peaks for sadya meals; prices of banana leaves, yam and certain vegetables can jump in the week before Thiruvonam.
December (Christmas)Meat and fish demand rises; go early.
Summer (March–May)Heat makes fish spoil faster – buy in the morning and cook the same day.

Vegetables: what is cheap and what is not

Kerala grows a lot of tapioca (kappa), banana, plantain, yam, drumstick, pumpkin and greens, and these are usually reasonable. Much of the onion, tomato, potato and cabbage comes from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, so their prices swing with supply in those states. A practical rule for hostel cooking: base meals on rice, dal, eggs and one seasonal local vegetable, and treat onions and tomatoes as a variable cost. When is the trawling ban in Kerala?

Kerala bans mechanised trawling for 52 days each monsoon, usually from 9 June to 31 July. Exact dates are announced each year.

Why are fish prices high in June and July?

The monsoon trawling ban reduces the catch of many sea fish, so supply falls and prices often rise until the ban ends.
