Getting around Kalamassery: Metro, Trains, Buses, Autos and Boats

Kalamassery is one of the better-connected suburbs of Kochi: two Kochi Metro stations sit on NH 544, a small railway station handles local trains, and buses and autos fill the gaps. Most residents combine two of these each day. This page sums up every option and links to a detailed guide for each.

The short version

If you only remember one thing: the metro is the backbone, everything else feeds it. The Kochi Metro runs along NH 544 through Kalamassery and gets you to Edappally, Kaloor, MG Road, Ernakulam South and Vyttila without dealing with road traffic. For places away from the highway — HMT, the Medical College, NAD Road, Eloor, Kakkanad — you add a bus, an auto or your own two-wheeler.

Metro: the two Kalamassery stations

Kochi Metro Line 1 runs from Aluva in the north to Thrippunithura in the south-east. Inside Kalamassery it has two stops: Kalamassery (between Muttom and Cochin University) and Cochin University (between Kalamassery and Pathadipalam). Both opened to the public on 19 June 2017 as part of the first stretch, Aluva to Palarivattom.

KMRL, the operator, has generally run trains from about 6 am to about 10.30 pm on weekdays, starting later on Sundays, with extra late services around events. Timings do change, so check the Kochi Metro website or app before relying on a first or last train. Read the Kalamassery metro station guide and the Cochin University station guide for the stations themselves.

Trains: small local station, big stations nearby

Kalamassery’s own railway station is modest — two platforms and mainly passenger and MEMU halts. It is handy for cheap hops towards Aluva, Angamaly, Thrissur or Ernakulam, but most express and superfast trains run straight through. If you are arriving from another state, plan to get off at Aluva or one of the two Ernakulam stations. Each has its own page: Kalamassery railway station, Aluva station to Kalamassery and Ernakulam Junction and Town to Kalamassery.

Buses, autos and taxis

Private buses and KSRTC services run along NH 544 between Aluva and Ernakulam all day, and other routes branch off towards HMT, Kakkanad, Eloor and the Medical College. Buses are the cheapest way to reach places the metro skips. Our bus guide explains the patterns and how to ask for the right bus.

Autorickshaws are everywhere and are regulated by a government fare table. Ride-hailing apps work in Kochi too. Our auto and taxi tips cover the meter, night charges and how to avoid arguments.

Roads you will hear about

Two roads shape daily life here. NH 544 (the old NH 47) is the main Aluva–Edappally highway, with the metro viaduct above it — see the NH 544 Kalamassery stretch guide. The Seaport–Airport Road runs from HMT towards Kakkanad and Irumpanam; its missing link between HMT and the NAD area is still being built — see the Seaport–Airport Road guide.

Water Metro and the airport

The Kochi Water Metro does not stop in Kalamassery itself, but its Eloor terminal is close enough to make a boat trip to the High Court jetty a realistic weekend outing. Details and honest caveats are in Can you use Kochi Water Metro from Kalamassery?.

Flying in? Cochin International Airport is at Nedumbassery, north of Aluva. The usual budget route is the airport feeder bus to Aluva metro, then the metro south. See Cochin airport to Kalamassery.

Living at NAD Road: what this means for your commute

Ashraf Gents Hostel is at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal in Kalamassery. Its public profile lists the Seaport–Airport Road, the Science Park, Kochi RCC, the Medical College, NUALS, the Nippon skill centre and the Adani port area as within about 3 km. In practice that means most residents reach the metro or a main bus route with one short auto, bus or scooter ride, and some workplaces can be reached without the metro at all.

It is a men-only hostel/PG for students, staff and working men. The indicative rate on its public profile is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance — confirm the current figure and vacancies on +91 90746 23855. You can see the rooms on the home page photo gallery, and our distance chart from the hostel helps you judge your own commute.
