Neighbourhoods around Kalamassery: A Newcomer’s Map

Kalamassery is not one place but a cluster of neighbourhoods strung between Edappally and Aluva, with industrial Eloor across the river to the west and Thrikkakara and Kakkanad to the south-east. This map walks through each one in a paragraph, so you know what people mean when they say “South Kalamassery”, “HMT Colony” or “Pathalam” – and which guide to read next.

How to read the map

Think of Kalamassery as a strip along NH 544 and the metro viaduct, with the railway line running roughly parallel. Most shops, buses and the metro sit on that spine. Step off it in any direction and you are in a different kind of place: river and factories to the west, quiet housing colonies and the Medical College to the north-east, and the fast-growing Kakkanad side to the south-east.

Administratively, it gets confusing. Kalamassery municipality was formed in 1990 and, according to the municipality, is bordered by Aluva to the north, Edappally and Thrikkakara to the south and the Kakkanad–Kangarappady side to the east. Eloor is a separate municipality; Edathala and Kadungalloor are panchayats. Locals rarely care about the boundary – they name the junction or colony instead. Our place-names glossary decodes the acronyms (HMT, NAD, FACT, TCC).

Every paragraph below links to a fuller guide. Distances depend heavily on which junction you start from, so check any route on a map at the hour you will actually travel.

Inside Kalamassery municipality

South Kalamassery

The CUSAT side: the university, the Cochin University metro station, the Kalamassery Industrial Estate and a dense mix of student lodges, small workshops and eateries. Busy and convenient, with the highway close by. Read the South Kalamassery guide.

North Kalamassery and HMT Colony

PIN 683503. Built around the old HMT factory township, it holds Government Medical College, St. Paul’s College and the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park, with NAD Road running through towards the Naval Armament Depot. More trees, more space, fewer crowds. See North Kalamassery and HMT Colony and the hyper-local what’s near the NAD Road signal.

Kangarappady

A residential ward on the eastern edge of the municipality, closer to Kakkanad’s Civil Station and Infopark than to the highway. Popular with families and people who work on the Kakkanad side. See the Kangarappady guide.

The highway junctions

HMT Junction and Premier Junction are where most people catch buses, eat and change to the metro. They have their own pages: HMT Junction and Premier Junction. North along the metro towards Aluva are Companypady, Ambattukavu and Muttom.

West, across the Periyar

Eloor

An island municipality between two branches of the Periyar, home to FACT and dozens of chemical units, with a long and well-documented pollution history. Good for anyone working in the plants; less so for someone who wants green riverbanks. Read the Eloor guide.

Manjummel and Pathalam

The riverside approach to Eloor: Pathalam with its regulator-cum-bridge across the Periyar, and Manjummel with its old church and hospital (and, since 2024, a famous film named after it). See Manjummel and Pathalam and the road guide to Pathalam Bridge and the Eloor road.

Muppathadam and Edayar

Further north-west, in Kadungalloor panchayat, these two names mean industrial estates on the Periyar. Mostly visited for work rather than lived in by newcomers. See Muppathadam and Edayar.

North and east

Edathala

A large panchayat east of Aluva, past the NAD area. It contains the KMEA colleges at Kuzhivelippady, Rajagiri Hospital and busy junctions such as Pukkattupady. Read the Edathala guide.

Aluva

The market and railway town at the end of the metro line, on the Periyar. Most Kalamassery residents go there for long-distance trains, wholesale shopping and the Sivarathri festival. Read the Aluva town guide.

South and south-east

Thrikkakara

A separate municipality since 2010, home to the Vamana temple at the heart of Onam, Model Engineering College and Bharata Mata College, and administratively to much of Kakkanad. Read Thrikkakara: temples, colleges and daily life.

Edappally and Kakkanad

Edappally is the busy junction and shopping zone (Lulu Mall) to the south; Kakkanad is the IT and government district to the south-east. If you are weighing them against Kalamassery as a base, read Edappally vs Kalamassery vs Aluva and Kakkanad or Kalamassery?.
