Key facts
- South Kalamassery is the part of Kalamassery around Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and the Cochin University metro station on NH 544.
- The Kalamassery Industrial Estate, set up by the Government of Kerala, lies in South Kalamassery and houses many small and medium units.
- Kalamassery has more than one Kochi Metro station: Kalamassery near HMT and Premier junctions, Cochin University near CUSAT, and Pathadipalam towards Edappally.
- The Kalamassery municipality lists wards such as University, Industrial Estate, Unichira and Glass Colony on the southern side of town.

What “South Kalamassery” covers
There is no hard boundary, but locals use South Kalamassery for the stretch of town on the Edappally side of the HMT Junction area – roughly the CUSAT campus, University Road, the industrial estate and the lanes around them. Kalamassery municipality’s ward list includes names you will see on bus boards and shop signs here: University, Industrial Estate, Unichira and Glass Colony.
Further south the metro line continues to Pathadipalam and Edappally, and the municipality meets Thrikkakara. Use our neighbourhood map if the names start to blur.
Landmarks you will navigate by
- CUSAT main campus and University Road – the centre of gravity for students, with lodges, photocopy shops and cheap eateries. Our CUSAT stay guide covers the campus in detail.
- Cochin University metro station – on NH 544 beside the campus. See the CUSAT metro station guide.
- Kalamassery Industrial Estate – set up by the Government of Kerala, with small and medium manufacturing units. Workers here often live within walking or cycling distance.
- Pathadipalam – the next metro stop towards Edappally, close to the Museum of Kerala History.
Getting around from here
South Kalamassery’s great strength is the metro. From Cochin University station you can reach Edappally, Lulu Mall, Kaloor and the city in one ride, or go north to Aluva for trains. Buses run along NH 544 in both directions; see our bus guide.
The weakness is the highway itself. In August 2026 Onmanorama described hours-long jams on the stretch of national highway through Kalamassery, blaming a narrow HMT flyover, faulty pedestrian crossings and waterlogging. If you will drive or ride a scooter daily, test the route at peak hour first. Our NH 544 guide explains the junctions.
Food and daily needs
Because of the students, South Kalamassery has plenty of simple, cheap places to eat around University Road and the CUSAT junction – tea shops, “meals” hotels, juice and snack counters – and more choice at HMT Junction. Our food spots guide names places that appear on public listings. Groceries, mobile shops and photocopy centres are never far away.
Exam and admission days at CUSAT fill nearby lodges and restaurants quickly. If you are only visiting for a test or interview, see coming to CUSAT for an exam.
Living here: the trade-offs
| You get | You give up |
|---|---|
| Metro at the door | Highway noise and traffic |
| Lots of cheap food | Crowds, especially around exam days |
| Walk to CUSAT and the industrial estate | Higher demand for rooms near the campus |
| Plenty of other students around | Less quiet for study or day sleep |
None of this is a reason to avoid South Kalamassery – thousands of students live here happily. It is just worth asking whether you need to be *on* the campus doorstep, or whether a short ride from a quieter street would suit you better.
A calmer alternative across town
If you study or work in South Kalamassery but want quieter evenings, North Kalamassery is one option. Ashraf Gents Hostel is at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal (PIN 683563) – a boys’ hostel and PG for students, staff and working men. It is not on University Road, so you would commute to CUSAT by bus, auto or metro; check that route at your class times before you decide. Its public profile lists NUALS, the Science Park and the Seaport–Airport Road among places within about 3 km.
Photos in the gallery show twin-sharing rooms with cots and mattresses, red-oxide floors, a balcony and a kitchen. The indicative rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance – confirmed on the call (+91 90746 23855). Ask then about anything else you need, such as Wi-Fi or food.
