Getting there from Kalamassery
The metro is the simplest way. From Kalamassery station on NH 544 the train goes south through Cochin University and Pathadipalam to Edapally, the station for the mall. The ride takes a few minutes and there is no change of train. Fares on Kochi Metro were fixed in distance slabs from ₹10 upwards; check the fare on the ticket machine or counter, and consider the Kochi1 card if you will ride often.
Buses along NH 544 towards Edappally and Ernakulam also stop near the mall, and are useful if you are coming from a point away from the metro. An auto works for the return trip when you are carrying a big hypermarket load – agree on the fare or ask for the meter first; see autos, taxis and ride-hailing tips.
Weekend evenings and holidays are crowded – inside the mall, on the metro and on the highway. A weekday morning trip is calmer and quicker.
Using the hypermarket for a monthly shop
The Lulu hypermarket, laid out over two floors, is the part of the mall that saves residents money. It is worth a trip for:
- Bulk staples when there is a festival or month-end offer – rice, atta, oil, detergent.
- Items you cannot find in neighbourhood shops: specific North Indian or international brands, kitchen gadgets, bedding.
- Basic household setup in one go – bucket, mug, hangers, pillow, bedsheet, a small table lamp.
It is not usually worth the trip for a few vegetables or a packet of milk. Compare with supermarkets near Kalamassery before deciding.
Keep the bill under control
- Write a list at home and stick to it.
- Check the unit price (per kg or per litre) on the shelf label.
- Bring two strong bags or a backpack – you will be carrying it on the metro.
- Pool the trip with room-mates so one person carries a shared order and the fare is split.
Eating and spending time there cheaply
The food court is large, with many counters, but mall prices are higher than a meals hotel near your room. If you want to eat out, a single shared plate or a snack is enough – or eat a proper meal before you go. Our guide to eating well on a budget covers the cheaper options in Kalamassery.
Free things to do: walk the mall in air-conditioning on a hot afternoon, window-shop, or meet friends. Paid extras – the multiplex, gaming and ice-skating – add up quickly; decide your budget before you go. Other low-cost outings are in cheap weekend plans from Kalamassery.
