- The Kochi Water Metro crossing from High Court to Fort Kochi was priced at about ₹40 when it opened in 2024.
- The Hill Palace Museum at Thrippunithura, former residence of the Cochin royal family, has listed entry at about ₹50 for adults and is closed on Mondays.
- Marine Drive in Ernakulam is a free public walkway of about 1.75 km along the backwaters.

The rules of a ₹500 day
- Eat breakfast at home or at a tea shop before leaving. A meals hotel lunch is cheaper than any café.
- Carry water in your own bottle.
- Use the metro and buses, not autos, except for the last kilometre.
- Go in a pair or group — shared autos and shared snacks bring the cost down further.
- Keep ₹100 spare for the unexpected: a missed bus, a sudden downpour.

Plans 1–4: metro and water
1. End-of-the-line metro and the Hill Palace
Ride the metro south to Thrippunithura Terminal, the southern end of the line, and take a short auto or walk to the Hill Palace Museum, once the residence of the Cochin royal family. Listed entry is about ₹50 for adults; it has been reported as open from morning to late afternoon with a lunch break, closed on Mondays. The wooded grounds are worth the walk. Rough cost: metro fares both ways, entry, a tea — comfortably under ₹300.
2. Water Metro to Fort Kochi
Metro into the city, walk to the High Court Water Metro terminal and take the boat to Fort Kochi — about ₹40 each way when the route opened. Then walk: the fishing nets, the beach, St Francis Church, the old streets towards Mattancherry. Our Water Metro guide has the details.
3. Mangalavanam and Marine Drive
A bird sanctuary in the middle of the city and a free backwater promenade at sunset. Full plan: Mangalavanam and a Marine Drive walk. Cost is little more than the metro.
4. Aluva riverside at sunset
Metro or bus north to Aluva, walk to Manappuram and watch the sun set over the Periyar and the 1940 arch bridge. Probably the cheapest plan here. See Periyar riverside evenings — and do not swim.
Plans 5–7: by bus
5. Cherai Beach
Bus to Aluva, bus to North Paravur, bus or shared auto to the beach. Spend the afternoon, eat a fish thali, catch the sunset, and leave before the last buses thin out. Under ₹500 if you skip the resort cafés. Cherai day trip.
6. Kalady
Bus via Aluva to Adi Shankara’s birthplace on the Periyar: riverside shrines, the memorial tower, a simple vegetarian lunch. Kalady guide.
7. Thrikkakara temple and the CUSAT side
A short bus ride to the Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy temple, the temple most connected with Onam, then a walk around the Thrikkakara area. Very cheap; best early morning or evening.
Plans 8–10: city and free
8. Broadway on foot
Metro into Ernakulam and wander the old market lanes of Broadway — spices, cloth, steel vessels, hardware. You do not have to buy anything; if you do, it is cheaper than the mall. Broadway from Kalamassery.
9. A library afternoon
Spend a rainy Saturday in a public or reading-room library near home — free or nearly so, quiet, with newspapers in several languages. See libraries and study spaces.
10. Football night
When the season is on, Super League Kerala and some ISL matches at Kaloor can be watched for a few hundred rupees in the cheaper stands, and the stadium has its own metro station. Or watch a big match free at a tea shop with a TV. Football and cricket in Kochi.
