What Aluva Sivarathri is

Maha Sivarathri is observed across India in February or March. In Kerala, its biggest public expression is at Aluva Manappuram — literally “sand-ground” — a broad sandbank in the Periyar facing Aluva town, with a Shiva temple whose lingam stands on the open sand. People keep the night’s vigil there and, from the small hours onwards, perform bali tharpanam: a short ritual of offerings made for one’s departed parents and ancestors, led by priests at platforms (balitharas) along the water.

It is a family and community occasion rather than a spectacle. Most people come, finish the rite, bathe or wash in the river where permitted, and leave. The scale is what makes it remarkable: lakhs of visitors across one night and the following morning, according to press reports every year.

What 2026 looked like (as a guide to future years)

Exact arrangements change each year, but the 2026 numbers reported by Onmanorama give a fair picture of the scale:

  • Sivarathri fell on Sunday 15 February 2026; bali tharpanam ran from Sunday morning to around noon on Monday.
  • The formal start followed the Sivarathri vilakku and a midnight procession.
  • 110 bali platforms along the riverbank and a fee of about ₹100 per tharpanam.
  • 1,500 police, accident insurance arranged by the Devaswom Board and the municipality, and a green protocol on the ground.
  • 210 special KSRTC bus services to Manappuram, and Kochi Metro night services until 11:30 pm on Sivarathri.
  • Traffic regulations in Aluva from 4 pm Sunday to 2 pm Monday.

Treat these as indicative. Each year the police, KSRTC and KMRL announce fresh arrangements a few days before — check local news for your year’s dates and diversions.

Living in Kalamassery that week: the practical side

Kalamassery sits just south of Aluva on NH 544, the metro and the railway, so the festival spills over:

  • NH 544 towards Aluva gets slow from the evening of Sivarathri, and diversions inside Aluva town make buses unpredictable. If you work at the airport, Angamaly or north of Aluva, leave much earlier or ask to work from home. See NH 544 through Kalamassery for the usual pinch points.
  • Metro trains to Aluva are packed in the evening and again after midnight. Kalamassery and the stations between it and Aluva — Companypady, Ambattukavu and Muttom — feel it too.
  • Trains: Aluva railway station is a short walk from the Manappuram area, so local trains through Kalamassery railway station are crowded around the festival.
  • The next day (Amavasya) rituals sometimes continue, and the clean-up and return traffic last into the afternoon.

If you want to go

  1. Go by metro or bus, not by bike. Parking near Manappuram is restricted and walking out afterwards is slow.
  2. From Aluva metro or the KSRTC stand, follow the crowd towards the river; police and volunteers guide the flow. The Aluva town guide explains the layout.
  3. Carry little: phone, some cash, water, a plain mundu or towel if you plan to take part. Keep the phone in a front pocket.
  4. If you are performing tharpanam, follow the priest at the platform; the fee is paid there.
  5. Respect the river. The Periyar is deep and fast near the Manappuram; go into the water only in the marked areas, if at all.
  6. Agree a meeting point with friends — phone networks can be patchy in thick crowds.

For a calmer visit, come on an ordinary evening; Periyar riverside evenings suggests when and where.

A base one stop south

Many families travelling for Sivarathri stay with relatives; working men and students who are already in the area simply ride in and out. Ashraf Gents Hostel, at Ashraf house, NAD Road, by the signal in Kalamassery, is a men-only hostel and PG for monthly stays — students, staff and working men — not a pilgrim lodge, and short stays are not promised, so ask on +91 90746 23855 if your need is short. The indicative monthly rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head, negotiable, confirmed on the call. See the rooms on the home page.
