Key facts
- Kalamassery railway station’s code is KLMR; it is in the Southern Railway zone and has two platforms.
- Kalamassery is a small Grade E station; the nearest major stations are Aluva (about 6 km) and Ernakulam Junction (about 11 km).
- MEMU trains between Ernakulam and Palakkad or Shoranur are among the trains that halt at Kalamassery.
- A 2016 Deccan Chronicle report said Kalamassery station had no express halts and that the municipality wanted a bus stop at the station’s NAD Road entrance.

What kind of station it is
Do not confuse Kalamassery’s railway station with its metro station. The railway station is a quiet two-platform halt on the busy line between Ernakulam and Aluva. Railway listing sites record well over a hundred trains passing through, including famous long-distance expresses, but only a few stop. Indian Railways classes it as a small Grade E station.
Trains that stop are mainly MEMU and passenger services — for example, listings show MEMUs between Ernakulam and Palakkad and between Ernakulam and Shoranur halting here in the morning and evening. Exact trains and timings change with each timetable, so check the NTES app, the IRCTC site or a station board before travelling.
What the station is good for
- Cheap trips north: Aluva, Angamaly, Chalakudy, Thrissur and beyond on MEMU or passenger trains, often for a fraction of the bus fare.
- Day trips: a MEMU towards Thrissur can be the start of a budget day trip.
- Going south: to Ernakulam Town or Junction, if a train’s timing suits you — otherwise the metro is usually simpler.
If you are travelling to Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai or North India, do not plan around Kalamassery. Book from Aluva or Ernakulam, where expresses stop. See Aluva station to Kalamassery and Ernakulam stations to Kalamassery.
Getting to the platforms
The station is off the main highway rather than on it. A 2016 newspaper report described poor approach roads, the nearest bus stop at Premier Junction being about 1.5 km away, and a station entrance on the NAD Road side, where the municipality proposed a bus stop. Some of this may have improved since — check the current approach on a map or ask locally before walking there in the dark.
Practical tips:
- Look up your train’s platform and expected time on NTES just before leaving; small halts do not always have announcements in every language.
- Buy an unreserved ticket at the counter or through the UTS mobile app before boarding.
- For early-morning MEMUs, arrange an auto the night before if you are not walking or riding.
Train, metro or bus? Common trips compared
| Trip from Kalamassery | Usually best | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aluva town | Metro or bus | Frequent all day; trains only a few times a day |
| Thrissur, Chalakudy | MEMU/passenger train if timing suits | Cheap and avoids highway traffic; check timings |
| Edappally, MG Road, Vyttila | Metro | Frequent and avoids NH 544 jams |
| Ernakulam Junction for a long-distance train | Metro to Ernakulam South | More frequent than local trains |
| Palakkad or Shoranur | MEMU if one fits, otherwise Aluva | Direct MEMUs exist but are few |
Ticket tips: unreserved tickets for MEMU and passenger trains are cheap, and Indian Railways’ UTS app lets you buy them on your phone. If you will use the same section every day — say, Kalamassery to Aluva or Angamaly for work — ask at the counter about a monthly season ticket, which is usually much cheaper than daily tickets.
Small-station habits worth learning
Local trains in Kerala are relaxed, but a small halt like Kalamassery has fewer staff and fewer facilities than a junction. Carry water, keep small change for the ticket counter in case UPI is not working, and do not expect food stalls on the platform. MEMU doors open on the platform side; trains stop only briefly, so be at the right part of the platform before the train arrives. If you are new to Kerala and unsure of the language, the Malayalam phrases page has the few words you need to ask whether a train goes to Aluva or Thrissur.
