Premier Junction, Kalamassery: Why It’s Called That and What’s There

Premier Junction is the stretch of NH 544 in Kalamassery in front of the tyre factory that opened in 1962 as Premier Tyres. The company changed hands in the 1990s and the plant is now run as Apollo Tyres’ Kalamassery unit, but the junction kept the old name. Kalamassery metro station stands right here, which makes it one of the town’s busiest points.

Where the name comes from

A tyre factory was set up at Kalamassery in 1962 as Premier Tyres – a 30-tonnes-a-day plant at first, according to trade reports. In 1995 it was taken over by PTL Enterprises, part of the Apollo group, and production was raised; today the site is described as Apollo Tyres’ Kalamassery plant, making truck, light-truck and farm tyres. In 2007 PTL announced a plan to relocate the unit to a rubber park for expansion; we could not confirm whether or how far that happened, so check locally.

Junction names in Kerala often stick to whatever was the biggest landmark when buses started stopping there. That is why you will hear Premier Junction, Apollo Junction and even TVS Junction within a few hundred metres on the same highway – see our glossary of Kalamassery place names.

What is at Premier Junction

  • Kalamassery metro station – right at the junction. Trains run north to Aluva and south through Cochin University, Edappally and the city. Our Kalamassery metro station guide covers exits and tickets.
  • Bus stops on NH 544 – long-distance and town buses towards Aluva and Ernakulam halt along this stretch; see buses in Kalamassery.
  • The tyre factory frontage – a long compound wall. It is a working plant, not a visitor site.
  • Shops, eateries and ATMs along the highway on both sides – they change often, so look around rather than relying on any list.

Arriving at Premier Junction by metro: a quick orientation

Many newcomers first see Kalamassery from this station platform. A simple way to orient yourself:

  1. Note which side of the highway you come down on – the long tyre-factory wall is a handy reference point.
  2. If you are heading north (HMT Junction, NAD Road, Aluva side), cross only via the station or a signal-controlled crossing.
  3. If you need the railway station or the Medical College, ask a bus conductor or auto driver for “HMT” first – most routes there start from HMT Junction.
  4. For a late arrival, read arriving in Kalamassery late at night before you travel.

Fares, last-train times and feeder buses change, so check Kochi Metro’s own app or website on the day rather than relying on old screenshots.

Who uses this junction

At 8–10 a.m. the crowd is a mix of factory workers changing shift, students heading to CUSAT one stop south, office staff riding to Edappally and Ernakulam, and delivery riders. In the evening the flow reverses. Weekends are usually calmer, but check for yourself. Knowing this rhythm helps if you are choosing when to travel or where to meet someone.

Traffic and crossing the road

In August 2026 Onmanorama described the roughly 500-metre run from Apollo Junction to TVS Junction as a gridlock spot, blaming two erratic pelican crossings between Premier and Aryas junctions, potholes on the narrow HMT flyover, and waterlogging at TVS Junction. In plain terms:

  • Cross only at signals or crossings, and watch for vehicles that ignore them.
  • Use the metro station’s stairs and concourse to reach the other side if you are already going in.
  • At peak hours, the metro is often faster than a bus or auto through this stretch.
  • In heavy rain, expect water on the road near TVS Junction.

For routes that avoid the highway altogether, read NH 544 through Kalamassery and quieter roads and routes.

From Premier Junction to a quieter room

Premier Junction is good for getting on a train, not for sleeping. Ashraf Gents Hostel is on NAD Road at the signal, away from the highway frontage – a men-only hostel and PG for students, staff and working men. From the metro you would continue by bus, auto or on foot via HMT Junction; ask the hostel for the easiest way at your arrival time.

The photos show twin-sharing rooms, a balcony and a kitchen. The indicative rent on the public profile is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance – confirm on +91 90746 23855. Our guide to what is within walking distance of the NAD Road signal helps you picture the area.
