How we wrote this page
Hyper-local guides go out of date quickly and are easy to pad with guesses. So this page lists only things we could confirm from public sources – maps, bus listings, official sites and news – and says plainly where you should look for yourself. We have not given walking times or distances to individual shops: measure them on a map from your own door, because “near the signal” can mean either side of a long road.
Transport from the signal
- Buses. A private bus route is listed between Aluva and NAD Signal, which makes the signal a useful starting point for trips north. Other routes link NAD Road with HMT Junction and the highway; ask at the stop which bus goes where. See buses in Kalamassery.
- Train. Kalamassery railway station is on NAD Road. It is served mainly by passenger and MEMU trains – handy for Ernakulam or Aluva, not for expresses. See the Kalamassery railway station guide.
- Metro. There is no metro on NAD Road. The nearest station is Kalamassery on NH 544, reached via HMT Road by bus, auto or a longer walk. See the Kalamassery metro station guide.
- Autos. Autorickshaws are the usual last-mile option. Agree the fare or ask for the meter; see auto and taxi tips.
Roads around the junction
NAD Road runs from the Kalamassery side towards the Naval Armament Depot near Aluva. It is a local road without the highway’s through-traffic, with long tree-lined stretches – our NAD Road guide has Street View. It connects with HMT Road, which leads to HMT, KINFRA, the Medical College and HMT Junction on NH 544.
Expect change. The Seaport–Airport Road’s HMT–NAD stretch – a 2.7 km link stalled for years over land – was put out to tender in January 2026 with a 12-month construction period. Diversions, dust and new junction layouts are possible during 2026–27; check local news if you plan around a particular turn.
Food, shops and daily needs
NAD Road is residential, so options are simpler and fewer than on the highway: small tea stalls, local eateries and corner grocery shops of the kind found along most Kerala roads. Map listings include, for example, Adivaram Kombara, a small restaurant listed on NAD Road. For a wider choice, residents head to HMT Junction, which has the area’s biggest cluster of restaurants and bakeries – see places to eat near NAD Road and HMT Junction.
Banks, ATMs, pharmacies and supermarkets are concentrated on the HMT Junction and highway side. Our banks and ATMs directory lists confirmed options.
Landmarks in the wider neighbourhood

- The Naval Armament Depot – a restricted Navy establishment; do not photograph its gates or fences.
- Government Medical College, Ernakulam and KINFRA Hi-Tech Park – along HMT Road in HMT Colony.
- HMT – the machine-tool factory that gave the colony and the junction their names.
Your first evening: a 30-minute check
- Find the nearest tea shop and grocery – note their closing times.
- Stand at the bus stop and ask which buses go to Aluva, HMT Junction and the metro.
- Find the nearest pharmacy and ATM on a map, and the route to them.
- Save the number of an auto driver you trust.

Then work through the rest of our first-week checklist.
