What and where NAD Road is
NAD Road takes its name from the Naval Armament Depot, the Indian Navy establishment on the Kalamassery side of Aluva, which the Navy says was inaugurated on 19 September 1958. The road links Kalamassery town with the depot area, passing Kalamassery railway station and joining HMT Road towards HMT, the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park and the Medical College. Quieter than the highway
NH 544 through Edappally and Kalamassery carries the through-traffic to Aluva, Thrissur and the airport, and it is loud, fast and often jammed. NAD Road is a local road. It has busy moments around the signal and at school and office hours, but it does not carry long-distance lorries and buses in the same way. For people who study in the evening or sleep in the day after night duty, that matters more than a few minutes saved. See quieter roads and daily routes and living on night shifts.
A road that is changing
The Seaport–Airport Road was planned to link Kochi’s port with the airport. Phase I from Thrippunithura to HMT, Kalamassery opened in 2003, but the next stretch stalled for years because land belonged to HMT and the defence establishment. Reports say about 2 km between HMT and NAD was completed by 2022; in 2025–26 the state took over land from HMT and the depot, gave technical sanction for the 2.7 km HMT–NAD section and issued a tender notice in January 2026. When it is finished, the NAD area should have a more direct road to the airport side.
The Adani Logistics Park on land near HMT and the Medical College adds jobs nearby. Both projects will bring construction traffic for a while; check current conditions when you visit.
The honest downsides
- No metro on the road. You will need an auto, bus or two-wheeler to reach Kalamassery or Cochin University metro station. See the Kalamassery metro guide.
- Fewer shops right on the road. Most residents eat and shop at HMT Junction or along the highway — see food spots near NAD Road.
- Late-night autos are scarcer than on the highway. Plan late arrivals: arriving late at night.
- Restricted defence land. The depot is not open to visitors and should not be photographed.
