HMT Junction, Kalamassery: A Local Guide

HMT Junction is where HMT Road leaves NH 544 in Kalamassery and heads east past the HMT factory towards the Medical College, NUALS, KINFRA and NAD Road. For people living in North Kalamassery it is the everyday hub – the place to catch a bus, buy groceries or eat – and also a known traffic and waterlogging spot.

Getting your bearings

Stand at HMT Junction facing away from the highway and you are looking up HMT Road. Follow it and you pass the HMT factory and HMT Colony, then roads branching to Government Medical College, NUALS, the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park and the Adani logistics site. NAD Road, Kalamassery railway station and the route towards the Naval Armament Depot and Aluva are on this side too.

Behind you, NH 544 runs south to Premier Junction, the Kalamassery metro station and Edappally, and north towards Aluva. A road-over-rail bridge, the HMT flyover, carries traffic over the railway nearby.

Why it matters to residents

The flyover and the floods

Onmanorama’s August 2026 report on Kalamassery traffic pointed to the narrow HMT flyover, repeatedly patched for potholes, whose widening has been stuck for more than 15 years for want of railway clearance. It also mentioned uneven road at HMT Junction and waterlogging at nearby TVS Junction after rain. None of this is unusual for Kochi, but it changes how you plan:

  • Allow extra time at office hours and on rainy evenings.
  • If you live on the HMT Road side, the railway station or a ride to the metro can beat the highway.
  • During the monsoon, keep your phone and documents in a dry bag – see monsoon tips.

A name that outlived the boom years

When HMT was at its peak, the junction was literally the factory’s front door: workers walked or cycled in from HMT Colony and the bus stop served shift changes. Machine-tool demand later fell and the company shrank, but the name spread – to the road, the colony, a post office (HMT Colony P.O.) and a municipal ward. For newcomers this can be confusing, because “HMT” may mean the factory, the junction, the colony or the whole north side of town. When someone says “near HMT”, ask which one. Our place-names glossary untangles this.

A first-week routine around the junction

  • Day 1: walk the junction once in daylight to find the bus stops for each direction and a pharmacy.
  • Day 2: try two or three tea shops and a meals place – see the cheap meals playbook.
  • Day 3: time the trip from your room to work or college at the hour you will actually travel.
  • By the weekend: know one alternative route that avoids the flyover when it is jammed.

What’s changing around HMT Road

Former HMT land east of the junction is being reused. The Adani Logistics Park is being built on about 70 acres between HMT and the Medical College; the state has approved, in principle, a Judicial City on 27 acres of HMT land; and the Seaport–Airport Road’s second phase is planned to run from HMT Road via NAD Junction. Expect construction traffic for some years. The Medical College Road guide goes further along the corridor.

A room a short ride from the junction

Many people who work or study off HMT Road prefer to live slightly away from the highway noise. Ashraf Gents Hostel is on NAD Road, at the signal – a boys’ hostel and PG for students, staff and working men. Its public profile names the Medical College, NUALS and the Science Park among places within about 3 km.

Photos show twin-sharing rooms, red-oxide floors, a kitchen and a tiled bathroom. Indicative rent is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance; meals, Wi-Fi and other details are things to ask on the call (+91 90746 23855).
