Muttom: the depot station
Muttom is where Kochi Metro keeps and maintains its trains. The depot covers about 23.6 hectares – larger than first planned – and holds the Operations Control Centre. Rooftop solar on depot sheds and stations is part of the metro’s green-energy design. From the train you will see stabling lines and sheds between Muttom and Ambattukavu.
For passengers, Muttom is useful for the colleges in the area, notably SCMS – see our stay near SCMS Muttom page – and for small businesses along the highway. It is a short hop from Kalamassery, so some students living in Kalamassery commute by metro or bus.
Ambattukavu and Companypady
These are quieter stations serving the highway strip and residential lanes behind it. Wikipedia’s entry for Companypady describes it as serving the area’s industrial land along the corridor; locally, people link the name to a company that once stood nearby, but we could not confirm which, so we will not guess. Ambattukavu’s name appears to include *kavu* (a sacred grove or shrine), a common ending in Kerala place names.
- Use these stations if your college, workshop or office is on the Aluva side of Kalamassery.
- For colleges further east, such as KMEA at Edathala, you will usually need a bus or auto from the highway.
- If you are going to the railway station or UC College, continue to Aluva.
Which station should you use?
Station names do not always match the neighbourhood people mean, so think in terms of what you need:
- For Kalamassery town, HMT and NAD Road – Kalamassery station, then bus or auto.
- For SCMS and the Muttom stretch – Muttom.
- For lanes behind the highway between Muttom and Aluva – Ambattukavu or Companypady, whichever is nearer your door; check on a map before your first trip.
- For long-distance trains, KSRTC buses or the Periyar bathing ghats – go to Aluva; see the Aluva town guide.
- For the airport – the metro does not reach it; see Cochin airport to Kalamassery.
Walking from a station into the lanes behind NH 544 can involve crossing the highway; use signals and footpaths, and take extra care after dark when lighting is patchy.
Practical riding tips
- Fares, timings and passes change; check KMRL’s official site or app before you rely on a schedule.
- Off-peak, trains on this northern end can be less crowded than further south towards Edappally – but school and office hours fill them too.
- For late-night or early-morning shifts, compare the metro’s first and last trains with your hours – a bus may run when the metro does not.
- Our getting-around hub and Aluva railway station guide cover connections.
For students and workers on the Aluva side
If you study or work around Muttom or Companypady but want the services of Kalamassery town, a room on NAD Road can work. Ashraf Gents Hostel is a men-only hostel and PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal, with twin-sharing rooms, a balcony and a kitchen in its photos. NAD Road heads towards the Aluva side, so ask the hostel which bus or route is quickest to your station.
The indicative monthly rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head, negotiable, with one month’s advance – confirm on +91 90746 23855.
