Cochin International Airport to Kalamassery: Arriving the First Time

Cochin International Airport is at Nedumbassery, north of Aluva. The budget way to Kalamassery is KMRL’s electric feeder bus from the airport to Aluva metro station, then the metro south; the simplest way, especially late at night or with luggage, is a taxi.

Option 1: feeder bus and metro

Kochi Metro has run an airport feeder for years. The first version, Pavan Doot, run with KSRTC using electric buses, started from Terminal 1 in February 2020. In January 2025 KMRL launched air-conditioned electric Metro Connect buses, with the Aluva–Airport route reported at a flat ₹80, running every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes otherwise. The first bus was reported to leave Aluva at 6.45 am and the last bus to leave the airport at 11 pm. You can pay by cash, UPI, RuPay card or the Kochi1 card.

At Aluva metro station, take any southbound train. Kalamassery is five stops on; Cochin University is the next one after it. See our Kalamassery metro station guide for the last-mile options from there.

Option 2: taxi or app cab

Prepaid taxi counters are normally found in the arrivals area, and app-based cabs also serve the airport; follow the airport’s signs for the designated pick-up zone. The drive follows NH 544 south through Aluva into Kalamassery. Give the driver a landmark as well as an address — ’NAD Road signal, Kalamassery’ or ’HMT Junction’ is clearer than a house name.

What about the Seaport–Airport Road?

As the name suggests, the Seaport–Airport Road is meant to connect Kochi’s port with the airport through Kalamassery and bypass the NH 544 traffic. The first phase (towards Kakkanad and Irumpanam) opened in 2003, but the stretch from HMT through the Naval Armament Depot area and on to the airport has been held up for years. A 2.7 km HMT–NAD link was put out to tender in early 2026 with a target of early 2027. Until it opens, airport traffic still uses NH 544. Our Seaport–Airport Road guide follows the story.

First-arrival checklist

  1. Before flying, save your accommodation’s full address and phone number offline.
  2. Check your landing time against the feeder bus and metro hours; if you land late, plan on a taxi.
  3. Keep some cash and a working UPI app — small buses and autos may not take cards.
  4. Get a local SIM or check roaming before you leave the airport if you need maps. See mobile and internet in Kalamassery.
  5. Message whoever is expecting you when you board the bus or taxi.

Flying home again: going the other way

Once you live in Kalamassery, the airport trip in reverse is the one you will make most. The metro north to Aluva and the feeder bus to the terminal is the cheapest combination, but it involves a change and depends on bus frequency. Allow a generous buffer: NH 544 through Aluva can slow down sharply at peak times, during festivals such as Aluva Sivarathri and when heavy rain causes waterlogging. For early-morning flights, when the metro and feeder may not be running yet, book a taxi the evening before.

Students and workers who fly home only at Onam, Christmas or Eid find that airport taxis and fares spike in those weeks. Booking early and travelling light (so the bus and metro remain practical) saves money. Our monthly budget guide suggests setting aside a little each month for trips home.
