Key facts
- Cochin International Airport (CIAL) is at Nedumbassery in Ernakulam district, about 25 km north-east of Kochi city centre.
- CIAL opened for commercial flights in 1999 and was India’s first airport built under a public–private partnership, funded largely by non-resident Indians.
- In 2015 CIAL became the world’s first airport to run fully on solar power.
- CIAL handled more than 11 million passengers in 2025–26 and has domestic, international and business-jet terminals plus a cargo complex.
- The airport is reached from Kochi by NH 544 through Aluva; Angamaly railway station, about 5 km away, is the nearest station.

Who works at the airport
CIAL is a big employer beyond its own staff. Airlines, ground-handling companies, cargo agents, security agencies, duty-free and food outlets, cab operators and maintenance contractors all hire people who work on rosters. The airport has domestic (T1), international (T3) and business-jet terminals and a cargo complex, and it handled more than 11 million passengers in 2025–26. It is also famous for running fully on solar power since 2015.
Most of these jobs share one feature: shifts that start or end at hours when buses are thin. That decides where you can sensibly live.
Kalamassery, Aluva or near the airport?
| Base | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Near the airport (Nedumbassery, Athani, Angamaly side) | Shortest ride to work, early-morning shifts | Fewer shops and evening options; further from the city |
| Aluva | Halfway point; big railway station; Aluva metro terminus | Town-centre traffic on NH 544 |
| Kalamassery | Cheaper shared rooms, metro and colleges, city access on days off | Longer ride to the airport; plan for odd-hour shifts |
If you are also studying (for example an aviation or hospitality course in the city), or your partner or brother works in Kalamassery, the trade-off tilts towards Kalamassery. Our Aluva town guide and Edappally vs Kalamassery vs Aluva help compare.
The commute in practice
- Two-wheeler – the most common choice for shift staff. The route is NH 544 north through Aluva towards Athani and the airport turn. Read NH 544 through Kalamassery for the junctions.
- Metro plus feeder – the Blue Line runs from Kalamassery to Aluva. KMRL has operated feeder buses from Aluva metro to the airport; check current timings, as they may not match early shifts.
- Company transport – some airlines and handling agencies provide pick-up for night shifts. Ask at the interview.
- The Seaport–Airport Road – despite its name it does not yet run through to the airport; the HMT–NAD gap and the stretch beyond were still being built in 2026. See the Seaport–Airport Road guide.

Sleeping on an airport roster
Airport rosters often rotate between early, day and night duties within a week. Blackout curtains or an eye mask, earplugs, and a roommate on a similar schedule make a big difference in a shared room. Keep your airport ID, uniform and shoes ready the night before, and plan where you will eat after a 2 a.m. finish. Our night-shift living guide has more.
Days off: why some crew prefer the city side
Airport staff who live right beside the airport often say the hardest part is the day off – there is little to do nearby. From Kalamassery the metro takes you to Edappally, Lulu Mall and central Ernakulam without a car, CUSAT and the colleges bring a younger crowd, and the railway stations make trips home simpler. If you are on a fixed contract of a year or two, that quality-of-life difference can matter as much as the shift commute. For ideas, see cheap weekend plans from Kalamassery.
Ashraf Gents Hostel for airport staff
Ashraf Gents Hostel is a boys’ hostel / PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal in Kalamassery, for students, staff and working men – men only. NAD Road connects Kalamassery with the Aluva side, and the address is in the Aluva postal area (PIN 683503). The airport is not within the hostel’s listed 3 km radius, so time the ride to the airport for your earliest shift before you decide.
The indicative rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance, confirmed on the call. Shift staff should ask about entry timings and parking for a two-wheeler on +91 90746 23855. See the rooms in the photo gallery.
