Edayar Industrial Area: Guide for Workers Living near Kalamassery

Edayar is the industrial strip on the Periyar north-west of Kalamassery, past Pathalam and Muppathadam. It is home to mineral-processing and chemical units such as Cochin Minerals and Rutile, the former Binani Zinc plant, and a mix of smaller factories and warehouses. Most people who work there do not live there – they commute in from Kalamassery, Aluva or Eloor.

Where Edayar is

Edayar sits on the banks of the Periyar on the Aluva side of the Eloor industrial belt. From Kalamassery you head west through Pathalam and then north through the Muppathadam area; from Aluva it is a short way south-west. The river is the reason it exists – the older units needed water for processing and a route to the port. For the neighbourhood around it, see Muppathadam and Edayar.

What kind of units work there

  • Mineral and chemical processing. Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd (CMRL), founded in 1989 with assistance from the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), has its headquarters and plant here. It makes synthetic rutile (beneficiated ilmenite), ferric and ferrous chloride and related products.
  • The former zinc plant. Binani Zinc was commissioned in 1967 with Canada’s Cominco at Binanipuram, on the Periyar. It stopped zinc smelting in 2014 and is now Edayar Zinc Ltd.
  • Small and medium units and warehouses – processing, fabrication, storage and transport businesses that cluster around the larger plants.

The Binani site’s second life

In December 2022 Edayar Zinc announced "Fortune Grownd", an ₹800-crore multi-zone industrial and logistics park on its 108 acres in the Edayar Industrial Development Area, with about 25 lakh sq ft of buildings and a target of at least 6,000 jobs. The announced timeline was construction from 2023 and operation by 2026. We could not confirm how far it has progressed, so check the latest news before you plan around it.

What the work is like

Jobs in the belt are mostly plant-based: operators, chemists, maintenance fitters, electricians, lab assistants, drivers and loaders, plus contract labour for shutdowns and housekeeping. Many roles involve shifts. Chemical plants expect strict safety discipline – PPE, permits and inductions – and the area’s long history of pollution complaints means environmental compliance is a real part of the job. If you are coming from an ITI or polytechnic, the ITI trainee hostel guide has tips for your first job.

Commuting from Kalamassery

There is no metro to Edayar. The practical options are a two-wheeler, company or contractor transport, private buses towards Eloor and Aluva, or shared autos. The roads through Pathalam and Muppathadam carry heavy industrial traffic at shift changes, and some low-lying stretches can flood in heavy monsoon rain. Read the Pathalam bridge and Eloor road guide and the monsoon tips before you settle on a route.

Why live in Kalamassery rather than next to the plants? Shops, hospitals, the metro and the railway station are all in Kalamassery, and many workers prefer to sleep away from the industrial belt. Others choose Aluva – see the Aluva town guide to compare.

Before you accept a job in the belt

  • Ask whether you are on the company’s rolls or a contractor’s, and get the wage, shift pattern and weekly off in writing.
  • Ask which PPE the employer provides and whether you need your own safety shoes.
  • Find out where the nearest clinic is and how emergencies are handled; our list of hospitals and clinics near Kalamassery is a starting point.
  • Check whether the company runs a bus from Kalamassery or Aluva – it can decide where you should live.
  • If you are new to Kerala, carry ID for police verification when you take a room.
