Muppathadam and Edayar: Living near the Periyar Industrial Belt

Muppathadam and Edayar are two industrial localities in Kadungalloor panchayat, on the Periyar between Aluva and Eloor. Most people who come here are workers, engineers and contractors heading to the industrial estates; few newcomers settle in them. This guide explains where they are, what is there, and how workers usually arrange their stay.

Getting the geography straight

Both names belong to Kadungalloor, a gram panchayat in Paravur taluk that lies across the Periyar from Aluva and north of Eloor. According to Wikipedia, the panchayat covers about 18 km² and has around 30,000 people; Muppathadam is also the name of wards within it. Edayar sits on the riverbank, and the area around the old Binani Zinc works is known as Binanipuram (PIN 683502).

In practice: if Aluva is north and Kalamassery south-east, Muppathadam and Edayar are to the west, along the river, with Eloor further south. Our neighbourhood map shows how they fit with the rest.

What is there

The two industrial estates host a mix of large and small units. Wikipedia names Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL), Indo-German Karbon and Periyar Forms among Kadungalloor’s industries. At Edayar, the former Binani Zinc plant – renamed Edayar Zinc Ltd – stopped smelting in 2014; in December 2022 the company announced a ₹800 crore multi-zone industrial park and logistics hub on 108 acres in the Edayar Industrial Development Area, then expected to be operational by 2026. We could not confirm its current status, so check with the company or local news.

Beyond the factories

Kadungalloor is not only industrial. Wikipedia counts around 21 temples, 9 mosques and 3 churches in the panchayat, and the Uliyannoor temple on a Periyar islet is traditionally said to have been built by the legendary carpenter Perumthachan. Residential lanes away from the estates are green and quiet, with paddy and river views in places.

The river and the environment

This is part of the same industrial stretch of the Periyar as Eloor, and the same concerns apply: reports over many years of discoloured water and fish deaths, contested between residents, industries and regulators. Our Eloor guide summarises that history with sources. Practical advice for residents is simple – use treated drinking water, and do not swim or fish near outfalls.

Where workers here usually live

OptionProsCons
Rooms near the estateShortest commute, useful for night shiftsFew shops or food options; limited choice of rooms
Aluva townRailway, metro terminus, marketsCrowded centre; river crossing to work
KalamasseryMore rooms and food; metro and railLonger ride, usually via Eloor or Aluva side

Bus links exist between Aluva and the industrial area, but many workers rely on two-wheelers or company transport. Before accepting a room anywhere, ride the route once at the hour your shift starts. See Aluva town guide if you are considering the town.

A Kalamassery base for Edayar and Muppathadam jobs

If your work is spread across the belt – a week at Edayar, a week in Eloor, interviews in Kalamassery – a central shared room can make sense. Ashraf Gents Hostel is at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal, Kalamassery 683563: a boys’ hostel and PG for students, staff and working men, with a kitchen in its photos for residents who cook. It is not next to the Edayar estates, so check the commute before deciding.

The indicative rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance. Look through the photos, then call or WhatsApp +91 90746 23855 to confirm vacancies and ask about entry times if you work shifts.
