Edathala: A Guide for Men Living East of Kalamassery

Edathala is a large gram panchayat east of Aluva, beyond the Naval Armament Depot side of Kalamassery. It is semi-rural in places and fast-growing in others, with the KMEA colleges at Kuzhivelippady, Rajagiri Hospital and busy junctions such as Pukkattupady. Students and staff here often weigh living locally against a base in Kalamassery or Aluva.

Edathala at a glance

Edathala is not a town so much as a spread of villages and junctions governed by one panchayat. According to Wikipedia it covers about 35 km² and had 77,811 people in 2011 – more than Kalamassery municipality itself. It sits in Aluva taluk, east of Aluva town, and stretches towards the NAD side of Kalamassery.

Names you will hear: Kuzhivelippady (the college area), Pukkattupady (one of the busiest junctions), Chunangamvely and Manalimukku. Shop signs and bus boards use these more than “Edathala” itself.

Colleges and the hospital

Kuzhivelippady is a small education hub. The KMEA Engineering College, KMEA College of Architecture and KMEA College of Arts and Science share the campus there, and Wikipedia also lists MES College for Advanced Studies and Al-Ameen College in the panchayat. If you study at KMEA, our hostel guide for KMEA students compares living near campus with commuting.

Rajagiri Hospital, a large private hospital, is in Edathala panchayat, according to Wikipedia. It is a major employer for nurses and technicians – see our guide for male nurses and hospital staff.

Daily life

  • Quieter than Kalamassery, busier than it looks. Junctions like Pukkattupady are crowded at peak hours; side roads can be very calm after dark.
  • Fewer late options. Eateries and shops thin out at night compared with HMT Junction or Aluva. Keep basic groceries at home – our kitchen shopping list helps.
  • Strong Muslim community presence in parts, with mosques such as the Kuzhivelipady Muslim Jamaath, alongside temples like Painaatu Durga and Kurumbakkavu Bhagavathy listed by Wikipedia. See places of worship.
  • Banking basics are local – Wikipedia lists SBI, Federal Bank and the Edathala Service Co-operative Bank.

Getting to Kalamassery and Aluva

There is no metro or railway station in Edathala. Most residents use buses or two-wheelers to reach Aluva (for the metro terminus, railway station and KSRTC stand) or Kalamassery. Private buses run on local routes, and one listed route runs between Aluva and NAD Signal in Kalamassery – check current timings at the stop.

The road picture may improve. The Seaport–Airport Road’s second phase is meant to continue from HMT past the NAD area towards Mahilalayam, Chowara and the airport side. Its 2.7 km HMT–NAD link was put out to tender in January 2026. Until the full corridor exists, expect some roundabout routes. Our Seaport–Airport Road guide tracks it.

The Naval Armament Depot lies between Kalamassery and this side of Edathala. It is a restricted defence area – do not take shortcuts through its land or photograph its gates.

Edathala student or worker? Consider a NAD Road base

For a KMEA student or Rajagiri Hospital worker, living in Kalamassery means more food, shops and transport options in exchange for a daily ride. Ashraf Gents Hostel is on NAD Road, at the signal – Ashraf house, Kalamassery 683563 – on the side of Kalamassery that faces the NAD and Edathala direction. It is a boys’ hostel and PG for students, staff and working men only.

The gallery shows twin-sharing rooms, a balcony, a kitchen and a tiled bathroom. The indicative rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance. Before you decide, ask on +91 90746 23855 about entry timings if you have early lectures or night shifts, and time the actual ride to Kuzhivelippady or the hospital yourself.
