What NAD is – in one paragraph
The Naval Armament Depot, Aluva – NAD (A) in Navy shorthand – is one of the Indian Navy’s armament depots. The Navy’s own account says it was inaugurated on 19 September 1958 by Vice Admiral R. D. Katari, the first Indian to head the Navy, and that it began as a storage depot before growing into a full armament depot handling storage, repair and maintenance. It marked its diamond jubilee (60 years) in 2018 with a technical exposition. A 1958 Press Information Bureau note, cited in our NAD Road guide, describes it as the Navy’s first armament depot set up in peacetime, on about 300 acres.
This is a defence establishment. It is not open to visitors, photography of the depot is prohibited, and you should not loiter near its gates or fences. Everything on this page is from public sources.
Why here?
Public sources do not spell out the reasons for the site, so we will not speculate in detail. What is well established is that Kochi has been a major naval base since before independence – today it is the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command – and that the land between Kalamassery and Aluva was then sparsely built, with rail and road links to the port. A depot on the city’s northern edge fits that pattern.
How the depot named the neighbourhood
- NAD Road – the road from the Kalamassery town side past Kalamassery railway station towards the depot. Read NAD Road, Kalamassery: a local guide.
- NAD Junction / NAD signal – the signalled junction on NAD Road that buses and autos use as a landmark. See what is within walking distance of the NAD Road signal.
- NAD bus stop and route boards – some private buses between Aluva and Kalamassery show “NAD” on their boards.
- Residential lanes – houses and small shops grew along the road to serve depot staff and later everyone else.
So when a Kalamassery resident says “I live near NAD”, they almost always mean NAD Road or the signal, not the depot itself.
NAD and the Seaport–Airport Road
The second phase of the Seaport–Airport Road is planned to run from HMT Road via NAD Junction to Mahilalayam, Chowara and the airport road. For years it was held up over land. An October 2025 report said about 2.5 hectares of NAD land (with ₹32.26 crore allocated) and about 1.6 hectares of HMT land were involved, and that the HMT portion had been handed over to the state road corporation. Our NAD Road guide notes that in January 2026 the state said the project had technical sanction. Expect construction and diversions around the junction once work starts.
Living near NAD as a civilian
For residents the depot mainly means a calmer road with fewer shops than the highway, and some long boundary walls. It also means sensible manners: don’t fly drones, don’t photograph the fence or gates, and carry ID. Our police verification guide explains why hostels in Kerala ask for documents.
