Key facts
- Government Medical College, Ernakulam is at HMT Colony, North Kalamassery (PIN 683503); the college says its casualty and ICU complex work round the clock.
- The medical college was established in 1999 by the Co-operative Academy of Professional Education under Kerala’s Department of Co-operation, and was earlier known as the Co-operative Medical College.
- The Cochin Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) is on the same Kalamassery campus; its new nine-floor, four-block building has a stated capacity of 451 beds.
- The ESIC Hospital Udyogamandal is on Eloor Road, Pathalam (PIN 683501), and serves workers insured under the ESI scheme.
- In Kerala, 108 is the ambulance number and 112 is the all-in-one emergency number.

If it is an emergency
- Call 108 for an ambulance or 112 for the integrated emergency line. Say “Kalamassery” and the nearest landmark — NAD Road signal, HMT Junction, Premier Junction or the metro station — rather than a house name.
- If you can travel, go to the nearest casualty. For north and central Kalamassery that is usually Government Medical College, Ernakulam, in HMT Colony.
- Carry your phone, Aadhaar (or any photo ID) and some cash. Government hospitals register you at the casualty counter; private ones usually ask for a deposit.
Save the hostel warden’s number and one friend’s number as emergency contacts. Hospitals will ask for a bystander, and a stranger cannot sign for you.
Government Medical College, Ernakulam
This is the main public hospital for Kalamassery. According to the college, the campus and hospital spread over about 60 acres at HMT Colony, North Kalamassery, and it has a casualty and ICU complex that run round the clock. It began in 1999 as a co-operative-sector college (the Co-operative Medical College) and is now a government medical college — older signboards and map pins may still use the old name.
Outpatient (OP) departments work on weekday mornings with a registration counter; arrive early, as queues build quickly. Fees at government hospitals are low, but medicines and tests may sometimes have to be bought outside. Read Medical College Road, Kalamassery for how the road and bus stops are laid out, and our PG near the medical college guide if you will be working or studying there.
Cochin Cancer Research Centre (CCRC)
The CCRC — sometimes called the Kochi RCC — shares the medical college campus. Its new building, inaugurated by the Chief Minister, is reported to have nine floors and four blocks with a total capacity of 451 beds. It is a specialist cancer centre rather than a general casualty, so go to the medical college casualty for anything urgent. Families supporting a patient should read our bystander guide and the CCRC stay guide.
If you are covered by ESI
Many factory, warehouse and contract jobs in the Kalamassery–Eloor belt deduct ESI from salary. If yours does, you are entitled to treatment through the ESI system. The ESIC Hospital, Udyogamandal is on Eloor Road at Pathalam (PIN 683501); the ESI Corporation has approved its upgrade from 100 to 150 beds. Ask your HR for your ESI number and e-Pehchan card before you need them. See the FACT Udyogamandal guide and Pathalam bridge and Eloor Road for directions.
