Key facts
- UIDAI allows document and address updates on the myAadhaar portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) free of cost until 14 June 2027.
- The same document update at a physical Aadhaar centre carries the UIDAI-fixed fee of ₹75.
- Name, date of birth, mobile number, photo and biometric changes cannot be done online and need a visit to an Aadhaar centre.
- Kerala set up Akshaya centres in 2002; there are more than 2,000 across the state, offering Aadhaar, e-District certificates and other online services.
- Updating your Aadhaar address is not compulsory, but many official forms now pull the address from Aadhaar.

First decide: should you change it at all?
This is the question most men in hostels skip. Your Aadhaar address is used by banks, mobile operators, scholarship portals, gas connections and government schemes. Changing it has consequences both ways.
| Keep your home address if… | Consider updating to Kalamassery if… |
|---|---|
| You expect to stay a year or less | You are settling here for several years |
| Your family still gets letters, ration or welfare benefits at home | Your employer, ESI or a state scheme needs a Kerala address |
| Your bank, voter ID and driving licence all show the home address | You are applying for a passport with Kalamassery as present address and want documents to match |
| You will move again soon (internship, contract job) | You have a rent agreement or other proof in your own name here |
Every time you change it, you will want to change it again when you leave. For short stays, most people simply keep their permanent address and give the hostel address as a ‘present’ or ‘communication’ address where forms allow — see how banks handle this in banks and ATMs.
The online route (free until June 2027)
- Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile. If that mobile is lost, you will need a centre visit first.
- Choose the address update, type the new address exactly as on your proof — house name, road, landmark, PIN.
- Upload a clear scan of a valid proof of address in your own name.
- Note the update request number and track it. Download the updated e-Aadhaar when approved.
According to a UIDAI notice republished by state governments, this document update is free online until 14 June 2027; the same service at a centre costs ₹75.
The usual difficulty for hostel residents is the proof. Hostels rarely issue documents UIDAI accepts, and a receipt alone is not enough. Look at UIDAI’s list of supporting documents first — a bank passbook or statement showing your Kalamassery address, for example — and only start once you have one. For PIN details see post offices and PIN codes.
What Akshaya centres are, and when to go
Akshaya centres are Kerala’s own network of government-authorised e-service centres, started in 2002 to bridge the digital divide — years before the national Common Service Centre scheme. There are more than 2,000 across Kerala. Many are Aadhaar enrolment and update centres, and they also handle:
- e-District certificates from the revenue department (income, nativity, caste and others — mainly for Keralites);
- PAN applications, passport form help and utility bill payments;
- requests on the Kerala Police Thuna portal, such as a police clearance certificate (police verification guide);
- municipal services through K-Smart (municipality guide).
Go to a centre when you need biometric work (fingerprint or iris update, new photo), a mobile number change on Aadhaar, or corrections to name or date of birth — none of which can be done online. Carry the original documents and your Aadhaar. Ask locally for the nearest Akshaya centre that offers Aadhaar services; not every centre does, and timings vary.
Avoiding problems
- Pay only the official fee and ask for a receipt with the update request number.
- Never share an Aadhaar OTP with anyone who phones you.
- Lock your biometrics on the myAadhaar portal if you are worried about misuse.
- Spell the address the same way every time — banks and the passport office compare them.
