Pick by room, not by advertisement
Coverage maps tell you about the street. Hostel life happens behind concrete walls, sometimes on a ground floor beside another building. Two people on the same corridor can have very different experiences with the same operator. Before you buy a long-validity plan:
- Ask your roommate or neighbours which network works inside the rooms.
- Run a speed test at your desk, on the bed and on the balcony, at night when everyone is online.
- Make a normal voice call from the room. Data can look fine while calls drop.
- If you have a dual-SIM phone, keep a second, cheap connection on a different network as backup.
Kalamassery is a busy academic and industrial area. Around CUSAT, the medical college and the industrial estates, evening congestion on 4G is normal; 5G or a second network helps.
The four operators, honestly
- Jio and Airtel — both have 5G in Kochi, and most people around the colleges use one of them. Plans change often; compare on the apps.
- Vi (Vodafone Idea) — works across Kochi; check indoor signal in your room before switching.
- BSNL — the public-sector operator; useful as a cheap second SIM and for landline-style broadband (FTTH) in some areas. Its 4G network has been expanding, so ask locally how it performs now.
If you are coming from another state, you do not need a new SIM: national roaming is free on all plans. A local SIM is only worth it if your home operator is weak here.
Is a phone hotspot enough?
| What you do | Hotspot from phone | Fixed broadband |
|---|---|---|
| Messaging, browsing, UPI | Plenty | Not needed |
| Online classes and lectures | Usually fine on a good 4G/5G signal | Better for long sessions |
| Mock tests and online exams | Risky — calls or signal drops can cut you off | Safer; keep hotspot as backup |
| Remote work with video calls | Possible, drains battery and data | Recommended |
| Large downloads, gaming | Expensive on data | Much better |

KFON: Kerala’s own fibre network
The Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON) is the state’s broadband project, launched on 5 June 2023. Its network operations centre is right here in Kalamassery. KFON provides free 15 Mbps connections to eligible poor families and paid plans to others; for homes, the last-mile connection is usually provided through local cable and internet operators. By September 2026 it had crossed two lakh connections across Kerala, according to UNI.
In Ernakulam district alone, Kerala Kaumudi reported that KFON grew from about 5,400 connections in June 2025 to over 15,000 by August 2026, delivered through around 236 local network providers, with monthly home plans quoted from ₹299. Prices and availability on your street can differ — ask a local operator.
For a hostel, a fibre line is a decision for the building owner, not for individual residents. If you need reliable broadband, ask the owner whether any connection exists or is planned, and whether residents may share the cost of one.
Small things that save trouble
- Keep your bank-linked number active — a lapsed SIM can lock you out of UPI (banks guide).
- Use the government’s Sanchar Saathi portal to check which mobile connections are registered in your name, and report a lost phone.
- In heavy monsoon rain, towers and power can drop briefly; download study material in advance (monsoon tips).
- Use a power bank; hotspot use drains phones quickly.
