If you are a student here: use your own library first
CUSAT, the medical college, NUALS, the polytechnic and the private colleges along NH 544 all have libraries for their students. They are quieter, have the right textbooks and usually decent internet. CUSAT’s library also provides off-campus access to its subscribed e-journals for its own students and staff. Rules on hours, guests and bags differ — check with your college. Our colleges near Kalamassery map shows where each campus is.
University and college libraries are generally for members. If you are not enrolled, do not assume you can walk in; ask the librarian about reference access or paid external membership.

Local reading rooms
Kerala is unusual in India for its village and ward-level libraries and reading rooms (often called a *vayanasala* or *granthasala*), many affiliated to the state library council. They tend to have newspapers, Malayalam books and a table or two; some keep competitive-exam magazines. Ask your neighbours or the ward councillor where the nearest one is, and what membership costs.
Ernakulam Public Library
In the city, on Convent Road, the Ernakulam Public Library was founded in 1870 and is described as Kerala’s oldest public library, with around 1.5 lakh books in Malayalam, English, Hindi, Tamil and Sanskrit. It has a members’ reading room, a students’ corner and a general reading room open to non-members for newspapers. It is a metro ride into the city plus a short walk or auto from Kalamassery — worth a Saturday for reference work. See Broadway shopping trip to combine errands.
Eloor Lending Library
For borrowing books rather than sitting to study, Eloor Lending Library, founded in Kochi in 1979, works on a different model: instead of a flat membership, it charges a reading fee of about 10% of each book’s price. Check its current terms before joining.
Cafés and other ‘third places’
Some students study in cafés around Edappally and in malls, but this costs money each visit and the noise varies. If you try it, order something, use headphones, and do not occupy a table at peak meal times. The Lulu Mall guide covers the area. Making a twin hostel room work for exams
Most hours of preparation happen in your own room. Twin-sharing is much easier than a crowded dormitory, but only if you and your roommate agree on a few things:
- Fixed quiet hours — for example 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., with calls taken on the balcony.
- A desk lamp, so one of you can study while the other sleeps with the main light off.
- Earplugs or noise-cancelling earphones — the cheapest exam investment you will make.
- A plan for the internet — download lectures and question papers in advance; see mobile network and internet.
- Early mornings — Kalamassery is quietest between about 5 and 7 a.m., before the highway traffic starts.
