Key facts
- Jan Aushadhi Kendras are outlets of the central government’s scheme selling generic medicines; a directory of the scheme lists one opposite the Medical College at HMT Colony PO, Kalamassery (PIN 683503).
- Karunya pharmacies are run by the Kerala Medical Services Corporation (KMSCL), mostly inside government hospitals; Kerala had 74 of them in 2024.
- Consumerfed says there are about 1,200 Neethi Medical Stores across Kerala, run by Consumerfed directly or by primary cooperative societies.
- Consumerfed announced in 2025 that online ordering of Neethi medicines would start in Ernakulam district, with customers uploading a doctor’s prescription.
- Prescription (Schedule H and H1) medicines are sold only against a valid prescription, including by online pharmacies.

Four kinds of counter, and when each makes sense
| Where | Who runs it | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private chemist on the main road | Private licensed pharmacy | Quick purchases, common brands, evenings | Full MRP is common; ask whether a discount applies |
| Jan Aushadhi Kendra | Franchisee under the central PMBJP scheme | Generic versions of regular, long-term medicines | Not every brand or strength is stocked; carry the generic name |
| Neethi Medical Store | Consumerfed or a local cooperative society | Discounted branded and generic medicines | Locations and stock vary; confirm before a long trip |
| Karunya / hospital pharmacy | KMSCL, inside government hospitals | Medicines prescribed at that hospital | Queues during OP hours; reported shortages at times |
None of these is “always cheaper” for every item. If you buy the same medicine every month, compare once at two counters and then stick with the cheaper reliable one.
Around the Medical College
Government Medical College, Ernakulam at HMT Colony is the area’s big government hospital, with an emergency (casualty) department. Patients prescribed medicines there should first ask at the in-hospital pharmacy counters which items are supplied free or at a discount; staff will tell you where to go for anything not stocked.
A directory of the Jan Aushadhi scheme lists a Kendra opposite the Medical College, HMT Colony PO, Kalamassery 683503, and another near the CUSAT signal in Changampuzha Nagar (682033). Directory listings can be out of date, so use the scheme’s official store locator or call before going. Hours were not published in the sources we found.
If you are a bystander for a patient, keep every prescription and bill in one plastic folder. Doctors often ask what was already given, and some schemes need bills for reimbursement. Our bystander guide covers the rest of that routine, and how to reach the Medical College covers transport.
Ordering medicines online
National online pharmacies such as Tata 1mg, PharmEasy, Apollo 24|7 and Netmeds take orders from Kochi addresses; whether your PIN gets same-day, next-day or slower delivery is shown in the app after you enter 683503 or 683104. Treat any delivery-time promise as the app’s own estimate.
- Upload a clear photo of the prescription — the full page, with the doctor’s name, registration number, date and your name visible. Orders for prescription medicines are checked by a pharmacist and can be cancelled if the image is unclear.
- Order before you run out. Online delivery is for refills, not for something you need tonight.
- Check the pack on arrival: name, strength, expiry date and an intact seal. Refuse or report anything that does not match.
- Quick-commerce apps (Blinkit, Zepto, Instamart and others) may list some over-the-counter items such as bandages, ORS or thermometers; they are not a substitute for a pharmacy. See our delivery apps guide.
- Cold-chain items such as insulin need careful handling; many people prefer buying them in person from a pharmacy they trust.
Consumerfed has also announced online ordering for Neethi medicines, starting in Ernakulam district and requiring a prescription upload. Check Consumerfed’s own website or app for whether it is live for your area.
Prescription basics that save trouble
- Keep a photo of every current prescription on your phone and a paper copy in your bag.
- Ask the doctor to write the generic name as well as the brand; it makes Jan Aushadhi and Neethi purchases easier.
- Antibiotics and many other medicines are Schedule H or H1: a pharmacist may refuse them without a prescription, and that is the law working as intended.
- Do not buy loose strips without a label, or medicines from unlicensed sellers on social media.
- Ask for a bill. You need it for any ESI or insurance claim.
If you are covered by ESI through your employer, your dispensary and the ESIC Hospital at Udyogamandal are covered in hospitals and clinics near Kalamassery.
When it is urgent, or after dark
For a medical emergency, call 108 for an ambulance or 112 for any emergency, and go to a hospital casualty rather than looking for a shop. Our emergency numbers page lists the verified helplines. For a routine need after 10 pm, hospital-area pharmacies are the most likely to be open, but we have not verified any shop’s hours — see the after-10 pm guide.
Medicines and a stay at Ashraf Gents Hostel
Ashraf Gents Hostel is on NAD Road at the signal, Kalamassery (PIN 683563; it sits on the border, so the HMT Colony PIN 683503 also reaches it). Its public profile lists the Medical College and the Cochin Cancer Research Centre among places within about 3 km. For pharmacy-app orders, give the rider the NAD Road signal as the landmark and keep your phone on loud.
Bystanders and patients’ relatives can take daily (per-night) rooms for men, as well as monthly stays; the nightly rate is quoted on the call. See daily rooms or rooms and rates, or call/WhatsApp +91 90746 23855. Ask on the call about anything specific you need, such as a fridge for medicines — we do not list facilities we cannot confirm.
