Kalamassery Medical College: one place, many names
Before you set off, know the names you will hear, because signboards, map pins and people use different ones for the same campus: Government Medical College, Ernakulam (official), Kalamassery Medical College, Ernakulam Medical College, GMC Ernakulam / GMCEKM, and the older Co-operative Medical College or CMC Cochin, which is why its website is still cmccochin.org. All of them mean the campus on HMT Road, HMT Colony, North Kalamassery.
The Cochin Cancer Research Centre (‘Kochi RCC’) is on the same campus, so the directions below work for both. Do not confuse the Medical College with the private hospitals on NH 544 or with Ernakulam General Hospital in the city.
Three roads into the campus
Most guides only describe the route from the highway. In practice there are three approaches, and choosing the right one can save a lot of time:
| Approach | Comes from | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| HMT Road from HMT Junction | NH 544 at Kalamassery, past HMT, KINFRA and NUALS | Metro users, Ernakulam city, Edappally |
| The Kakkanad side, via Vallathol Nagar | Kakkanad and the Civil Station area | Infopark and Kakkanad residents |
| The Aluva road via Manalimukku | Aluva town, Kodikuthumala, Thorappu | People coming from Aluva town who want to avoid NH 544 |
The second and third approaches are taken from a published Kakkanad–Aluva college bus route whose stops run Vallathol Nagar → Medical College → Manalimukku → Thurappu → Kodikuthumala → Aluva. Our Manalimukku guide describes the junction on the Aluva side, and the Medical College Road guide covers the KINFRA stretch.
From each arrival hub
| From | Distance (college figure) | Cheapest way | Fastest way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluva railway station | about 10 km | Metro to Kalamassery, then bus or auto | Taxi via NH 544 or the Kodikuthumala road |
| Ernakulam North (Town) station | about 10 km | Metro to Kalamassery, then bus or auto | Taxi |
| Ernakulam South (Junction) station | about 15 km | Metro to Kalamassery, then bus or auto | Taxi outside peak hours |
| Cochin International Airport | about 25 km | Feeder bus to Aluva, metro to Kalamassery, auto | Pre-paid taxi |
| Kakkanad / Infopark | — | Bus towards the Medical College via the Kakkanad side | Two-wheeler or auto |
Detailed walk-throughs: Aluva station, Ernakulam stations, the airport and the Kalamassery metro station. Times are not quoted because the highway and the HMT Road junctions vary greatly through the day.
Buses, autos and parking
- Buses: there is a bus terminal at the Medical College, and buses run along HMT Road. Ask for ‘Medical College’. Our bus guide explains how routes are signed.
- Autos: easy to find at Kalamassery metro and HMT Junction. Agree on the meter before you start; see auto and taxi tips.
- Own vehicle: parking inside the campus is managed by the hospital; follow the security staff’s directions, especially near the casualty entrance.
- Two-wheeler commuters should read living with a two-wheeler in Kalamassery.
In an emergency, call 108 for an ambulance or 112 for all emergency services rather than trying to drive a seriously ill person through traffic yourself. Wikipedia describes a 24-hour casualty at the Medical College; the college’s own pages list an emergency department.
