Learning the campus
The campus combines a working hospital with a college, and in your first days the two blur. Walk it once with a senior: the college block, the library, the hostel, the hospital entrance and casualty, the OP block and the new CCRC building. Notice where patients and bystanders queue so you can move around them without getting in the way.
For PG residents and house surgeons, the more important map is the route between your room and the wards at night. If you live off campus, ride or walk it once after dark before your first night duty.
Essentials around the campus
- Food: the campus cafeteria for daytime; tea shops and small hotels around the Medical College junction and Manalimukku for quick meals; HMT Junction and Kalamassery town for more choice. See eating well on a budget.
- Groceries and stationery: small shops near the campus; supermarkets in Kalamassery and Edappally for a monthly stock-up — see supermarkets and groceries.
- Phone and laptop repairs: electronics and mobile shops.
- Sport: the campus has grounds and courts; for more, see gyms and grounds.
We deliberately do not name individual banks, shops or eateries near the gate, because they open and close. Ask seniors — they will know which tea shop stays open for night duty.
Getting around without the metro
The campus is off the metro line. Most students use buses along HMT Road to reach Kalamassery metro station, autos when carrying things, and, after a few months, a two-wheeler. Weekend trips to Lulu Mall, Edappally or the city are simplest by metro from Kalamassery. Read our getting around Kalamassery overview once you have settled in.
Hostel or private room?
First check the college hostel allotment — it is usually the cheapest and closest. Students who miss allotment, PG residents who want more privacy, and those whose families are visiting often look for a private room. Compare at least two options, insist on receipts and read the hostel vs shared flat comparison before signing anything.
Ashraf Gents Hostel is one such option: a men-only boys’ hostel/PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal in Kalamassery, whose public profile lists the Medical College within about 3 km. The photos show twin-sharing rooms with cots and mattresses, a kitchen with sink and shelves and a tiled bathroom. The indicative rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance, confirmed on +91 90746 23855. Ask on the call about entry after night duty, internet and food, since these are not published.
