If your son is moving to Kalamassery for college, training or a first job, the most useful things you can do are visit the place with him, check a few specific details with the hostel owner, and agree a simple routine for keeping in touch. This guide is a checklist for parents, written from the hostel side of the table.

Key facts

Before you choose: visit together if you can

Photos and phone calls tell you a lot, but one visit tells you more. If you can, come with your son before the course or job starts, ideally at the time of day he will actually be coming and going. Walk the route from the hostel to the bus stop or metro, look at the street lighting, and see who else is staying. Our first-week checklist and neighbourhood map help you plan the trip.

If a visit is not possible, ask the owner for a short video call walking through the room, bathroom and kitchen, and ask a relative or friend in Kochi to drop by.

Questions to ask the hostel owner

  1. Who else stays here? Students, working men, or both? How many to a room?
  2. What are the entry and exit timings? Is there a gate time, and what happens if he returns late from a lab, exam or shift?
  3. What does the rent include? Food, electricity, water, kitchen use, Wi-Fi — get a clear yes or no.
  4. How is the advance handled? Refundable? Notice period? Receipts? See advance and agreements.
  5. What ID is needed? Expect Aadhaar or another photo ID for the register and police verification.
  6. Who do we contact in an emergency? Save the owner’s number on your own phone too.
  7. Visitors: can parents or relatives visit, and at what times?

Write the answers down and keep them on your phone. It avoids misunderstandings later — for both sides.

Safety without hovering

  • Routes: NH 544 through Kalamassery is busy and fast. Quieter local roads and daily routes are described in our routes guide. If he rides a two-wheeler, a proper helmet and rain gear are non-negotiable — see two-wheeler living.
  • Late travel: the metro’s last trains leave the terminal stations around 11 pm (per KMRL’s February 2026 change). Ask him to plan late returns rather than improvise.
  • Water: Kerala has many rivers and ponds, and the monsoon (roughly June to September) brings strong currents. Swimming in the Periyar or quarries with friends is a real risk; talk about it plainly.
  • Emergencies: save 112, the hostel owner, a classmate or colleague, and the nearest hospital. Our hospitals and clinics list is a good start.

Money: a simple monthly plan

Agree a monthly amount and a date. A separate bank account or UPI wallet for living costs makes it easy to see where money goes. Rent, food, transport, phone and a small reserve for medicines cover most of it — our monthly budget guide breaks it down. Ask him to send rent receipts or screenshots; it is a habit worth building.

Health and food

Many young men lose weight in their first months away because they skip breakfast and eat late. If the hostel has a kitchen, a few basics — rice, eggs, oats, fruit — go a long way; see the hostel kitchen shopping list. Pack his regular medicines, a copy of prescriptions and any health insurance card. Government Medical College, Ernakulam is in Kalamassery itself.

Staying in touch, the easy way

  • Fix one regular call — Sunday evening works for many families — rather than many anxious ones.
  • Agree that he will message when travelling long distances or returning very late.
  • Share live location only if he is comfortable; trust builds both ways.
  • Have the name and number of one friend or roommate, for emergencies only.

Homesickness in the first month is normal. Encourage him to join a college club, a sports ground or a place of worship — see gyms and grounds and places of worship.
