Key facts

  • OpenStreetMap lists six mosques within about 1.3 km of the NAD Road signal. Three are on the east side, about 0.8–0.85 km away, and the others are at Mattakkadu to the west, Kunnathery to the north-west, and further east.
  • Kunnathery, about 1.15 km north-west, is a traditional Sunni and Qadiriyya Sufi centre, with Madrasa Noorul Irfan Arabic College (est. 1967) and the maqbara of A. I. Muthukoya Thangal.
  • Mattakkadu’s mosque is mapped as a Salafi Juma Masjid. Salafi (Mujahid) mosques generally do not hold moulid recitations or uroos.
  • In Kerala the start of Ramadan and the Eid date are announced by the Qazis after crescent sighting, and can differ by a day from north India.
  • Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8–9 February 2027, with Eid al-Fitr around 9–11 March 2027, subject to moon sighting.

Distances are straight-line from OpenStreetMap, so road routes are a little longer. Kerala mosques usually follow the Shafi‘i school, and each belongs to a mahallu (parish) with its own committee and khatib. Both Sunni and Salafi mosques welcome men from outside the mahallu for prayers. The differences show up mainly in the extra programmes described below.

The weekly rhythm

  • Five daily prayers. Times shift through the year. Most mosques show a printed timetable, and the azan carries across the neighbourhood.
  • Jumu‘ah (Friday). The khutbah and prayer are around midday. Offices and colleges in Kalamassery usually allow a long Friday lunch break, but ask your employer. Arrive early, because the closer mosques fill up.
  • Swalath and dhikr majlis. Many Sunni mosques and the Qadiriyya centre at Kunnathery hold weekly gatherings, often on Thursday night (the night before Friday), to recite blessings on the Prophet, dhikr and supplications.
  • Madrasa. Children attend early-morning or evening madrasa classes at mosque madrasas. Weekend classes and adult study circles (darse) are common too.

Ramadan in the neighbourhood

Ramadan changes the whole area. Shops open late, iftar crowds gather before sunset, and the mosques stay busy until late at night.

  • Nombu kanji. Many Kerala mosques make and share *nombu kanji*, a rice porridge, for iftar. Some hand out parcels to the neighbourhood, so ask at your nearest mosque.
  • Iftar. Mosques often provide dates, water and snacks for those breaking the fast there, which helps men living away from home.
  • Tarawih. Extra night prayers after Isha, with long Qur’an recitation. Some mosques complete the whole Qur’an over the month.
  • Last ten nights. Night vigils (qiyam), extra lectures and, at Sunni mosques and shrines, special dua gatherings, especially on the 27th night, which many observe as Laylat al-Qadr.
  • Zakat and Fitr Zakat. Mosque committees often collect and distribute charity before Eid. Ask your mahallu how it organises this.

Living away from home during Ramadan? Plan your suhoor before you need it. Kalamassery has late-night food near the highway and the Medical College road, and a hostel kitchen lets you cook your own. See late-night survival guide and the mess guide.

Reformist (Salafi or Mujahid) mosques generally do not hold moulid, Milad processions or uroos, and focus instead on classes and Eid prayers on open grounds. Both traditions are present within a kilometre of NAD Road. Our Kunnathery history explains the Sunni and Sufi side, and Noorul Irfan Arabic College is the area’s best-known Islamic institution.

For newcomers and visitors

  • Introduce yourself to the mosque’s committee or imam if you will be in the area for months. They can tell you the local timings and programmes.
  • Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome to look around outside prayer times if they ask first. Dress modestly and remove shoes before the prayer area.
  • Expect road crowding near mosques on Friday afternoons, Eid mornings and Milad processions, and park considerately.
  • Exact programme dates depend on moon sighting. Follow your mahallu’s announcements, not national calendars.
