The busy spine: NH 544
NH 544 runs from Edappally through Kalamassery to Aluva and on towards the airport. It is the main road for buses and through-traffic, and it gets congested: a 2025 police report to the High Court described Edappally junction as a congestion hotspot, and Kochi Metro’s draft mobility plan reported delays of up to 14.5 minutes on the Edappally–Aluva–Athani stretch. Commuters quoted in the press also mention the section near Kalamassery metro station.
Option 1: Kochi Metro
The metro runs above NH 544, so it skips the road traffic. Line 1 runs from Aluva to Thrippunithura; in this area the stations are Kalamassery and Cochin University, with Muttom to the north and Edappally to the south. For trips to Edappally, the city centre or Aluva, it is usually the most predictable choice.

Option 2: Train from Kalamassery
Kalamassery railway station is on NAD Road, on the Ernakulam–Aluva line. It is served mainly by passenger and MEMU trains, for example on Ernakulam–Guruvayur, Ernakulam–Shoranur and Ernakulam–Palakkad services. For long-distance trains, people usually go to Aluva or Ernakulam.
Option 3: Local roads
- NAD Road — a local road from the Kalamassery side towards the Naval Armament Depot area near Aluva. In local experience it is quieter than the highway, with long tree-lined stretches. Read our NAD Road guide.
- HMT Road — links HMT Junction on NH 544 with HMT, the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park and Government Medical College; NAD Road connects with it.
- Seaport–Airport Road — a planned bypass corridor through Kalamassery. Its HMT–NAD stretch is still being completed; once finished it is meant to take pressure off NH 544.
Option 4: Buses and autos
Private and KSRTC buses run along NH 544, and local routes cover roads such as NAD Road — for example a route between Aluva and NAD Signal. Autorickshaws are the usual way to cover the last stretch from the metro or bus stop.
Tips from everyday experience
- Test your route at the hours you will travel before choosing a room.
- Combine modes: a short ride on a local road to the metro is often quicker than staying on NH 544.
- Allow extra time around Edappally, especially at peak hours and during festivals.
- Keep the metro’s first and last train times in mind if you work shifts.
