Why Aluva and not Kalamassery?
Kalamassery has its own railway station, but it is a small halt where mainly MEMU and passenger trains stop (see our Kalamassery railway station guide). Trains from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi or the north of Kerala almost always stop at Aluva, which is roughly 6 km north. For anyone coming to Kalamassery from outside the district, Aluva is usually the station to book to — often more convenient than continuing to Ernakulam and doubling back.
Your options at a glance
| Option | How it works | Good when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto + metro | Auto from the railway station to Aluva metro (about 1.5 km), then metro south to Kalamassery or Cochin University | Daytime, light luggage, predictable cost | Two changes; metro closes in the late evening |
| Bus | Buses heading to Ernakulam along NH 544 pass through Kalamassery | Cheapest; frequent in daytime | Crowded at peak hours; hard with big bags; boards may be in Malayalam |
| Auto all the way | Pre-agree or use the meter for the whole trip | Heavy luggage; going straight to NAD Road, HMT or the Medical College side | Fix the fare before you set off; night charges apply |
| Taxi or ride-hailing app | Book on an app or take a taxi from the stand | Late night, family with you, lots of luggage | Highest cost; app availability varies |
| MEMU / passenger train | Change at Aluva for a local train to Kalamassery | Only if a train is about to leave | Few trains stop at Kalamassery |
Route 1: auto to the metro, then the metro
This is the most popular route for newcomers because it avoids highway traffic and the metro fare is fixed. Wikipedia puts the metro station about 1.5 km from the railway station and the KSRTC bus stand, so take a short auto (or walk if you know the way and are travelling light). From Aluva metro station, every southbound train stops at Pulinchodu, Companypady, Ambattukavu, Muttom and then Kalamassery; the next stop, Cochin University, suits the CUSAT and South Kalamassery side.
Read the Kalamassery metro station guide to work out which exit you need, and the guide to the stops between Aluva and Kalamassery if you are heading somewhere along the way.
Route 2: the bus along NH 544
Aluva’s private bus stand is beside the metro station, and long-distance KSRTC buses stop in front of it too. Buses running towards Ernakulam, Edappally or Vyttila along the highway pass through Kalamassery. Ask the conductor for ’Kalamassery’, ’Premier Junction’ or ’CUSAT’, whichever is closest to where you are going. It is the cheapest option, but with a suitcase and a backpack it can be uncomfortable at office time. Our bus guide explains how buses work here.
Route 3: an auto or taxi straight through
If you have bedding, a trunk or a cooler box, or you are going somewhere off the highway such as NAD Road or HMT, a direct auto or taxi is less hassle. Kerala auto fares are set by the government and should follow the meter; agree on the fare before you start if the meter is not used, and expect a night surcharge late in the evening. See auto and taxi tips before you arrive.
Arriving late at night
Many trains from the north reach Aluva late at night or before dawn, when the metro is closed and buses are few. Plan ahead: tell your host your train number so they can track delays, keep a taxi app installed and charged, and know the full address you are going to. Our page on arriving in Kalamassery late at night has a step-by-step plan.
During Aluva Sivarathri (usually February or March), the area around the Aluva Manappuram and town gets very crowded and traffic diversions are common. See the Aluva Sivarathri guide.
